Download Genius: IT IS A SCAM.
#1
I've been directed to Download Genius a number of times and blew it off, mostly. I did once decide to sign up for the $3.99 trial membership and could not get it to download any of the files that sent me there from the get-go. Ended up canceling my membership before my trial was over and wrote to them explaining the issue. Got a form email as a response, of course.

Anyone use the service? Am I just an idiot and couldn't figure it out?

I was reminded of Download Genius when I read this thread about an ebook I've been trying to procure....

it's an obvious scam from a phish site (in the original suprbay thread, which is gone now, nobody ever suggested that).
if you gave them your credit card number you are an idiot, unfortunately. what will likely come next (it happens often) is unusual charges a few weeks from now when your cc# has been sold.
call bank or credit union, get a new card, don't pay for a scam again.

Yep. I'm a total fool for falling for it. I did change my car number the next day though so it was a $4 mistake and a pretty cheap lesson learned. Still, hate to fall for that BS and the ebook I was searching for that lead me to the site is under $10 to begin with.

Appreciate your response sir and applaud you for calling an idiot an idiot. Should have been obvious to me that it was a scam.

It's an easy thing to fall for Jellon. But seriously, call your bank.

Wow, why didn't I read this first? Confused

First thing that happened - I signed up, logged in - and my login didn't work. (Sent a support query but don't suppose I'll hear anything back.)

I too have been relieved of $3.99 - but when my login didn't work, I started reading around and found this. Just called my bank and stopped my card! Sad

Ouch - been online 20 years and I still fell for it.......Undecided

Just looked at more forums and discovered that your $3.99 is automatically 'converted' to a monthly payment of $39.99 'unless you cancel' - which you can't. So if you were as dumb as me and paid $3.99, stop your card NOW before this goes any further. (The scam originates in China from what I'm reading.) I feel such a prat. Angry

I'm pretty sure I accidentally stumbled on a site created by a foreign scam artist who hijacked a random nonprofit's domain to mimic suprbay and give fake advice about trustworthy sites to download from. This type of thing just makes me so angry, so I wanted to vent and see if anyone knows of something that can be done to catch these criminals. Let me explain from the beginning...

I wasn't even looking for a free download. I was just trying to buy an ebook anywhere EXCEPT amazon. The book title is "Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma Has Corrupted Healthcare." For whatever reason, googling that title plus "ebook" brings up a few obviously scam websites in the first page or two of hits, like this one freepdfxdownload.blogspot.com. I clicked on one of the hits that sounded safer, karensfoundation.org/gb/?id=/1-17817-deadly_medicines_and_organised_crime_how_big_pharma_has_corrupted_healthcare.html. That link brings you to a page identical this forum. If you click on the menu, it redirects you to this actual forum. Up until that moment, I had never heard of suprbay or karensfoundation.org, but my gut reaction was to be skeptical that they had any connection. But I was frustrated that I could still only find my ebook on amazon, so I silenced my inner voice and clicked on a link that an "uber senior" member, Stormium, had recommended. The alarm bells really started to go off when the site asked for payment, so I googled the site to see if I could find anything about it. Thankfully, before I gave any credit card info, one of the first hits I saw was a thread on suprbay, "Download Genius Is it legit" where it was made clear that the download site is a scam.

If you go to the main homepage at just karensfoundation.org, it seems real and if you google karens foundation, you find a facebook page and 5k registration websites, etc that all link back to the same homepage. So karens foundation seems to be a legit nonprofit that is an innocent victim. I assume they have no idea this is happening.

Does anyone know who I can report this to or if it's worth the effort? Are there any implications for karens foundation as a result?

I'd be interested to hear what other people think. Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's a scam

The only people who might help you (and, frankly, I don't believe for a second that they will; but, fwiw) are the admins of that site. You can (allegedly) reach them at the telephone number given on their contact page.

You could also try their web host, and their domain registrar (though I've no doubt they won't care either).

Well, I know it's a scam. I want to know how to get them punished. Smile

That won't happen.

The most you might conceivably achieve, with considerable effort, is to have the page removed.
