Do I need to hide my IP when uploading torrents?

Do I need to hide my IP when uploading torrents? Using TOR, or proxies, and whatnot...
If the answer is yes, once I've made my acc with my IP, is there a point in hiding it?

That has absolutely nothing to do with creating/structuring torrents.

Don't attempt to hijack threads with questions which are completely irrelevant to the topic.

The answer to your question--do you need to hide your IP when uploading .torrent files to TPB--is no, for two reasons.

1. Nobody ever needs to hide their IP. People sometimes choose to hide their IP to further reduce the already very low risk of being "caught".

2. Uploading a .torrent file to a Torrent site is not what gets people "caught". If you are going to be "caught" it will be when you are using your Torrent client to up/download; and that has nothing to do with TPB--so having registered on TPB with your IP is irrelevant.

I replied, but I' redacted sin Sid (a true pro) replied... I didn't see it...

Sid, I actually GOT caught...

Was I just unlucky. I didn't hide my IP when downloading.

I have BT Guard and D/L magnets.. .This stupid movie I got form an unknown site, and it was a straight download... it said torrent but I think It was just a peer to peer (what do I know)

Comcast ( my ISP sent ) the scare letter which worked on my wife...

Any thoughts (besides the obvious you're stupid, LZA) HAHAHHAHAHA

I don't mean to hijack... I replied misunderstanding his question...  I though he meant when the actuall upload takes place..  I would say yes it's better to be protected. Would you agree or am I still misunderstanding??

Good to finally make your acquaintance in a post... BTW!!

Is it better to be protected? Google "air bag injuries" and then ask yourself whether it would be better to wear a full-face crash helmet whenever you're in a car and, more importantly, whether you're actually going to start wearing a full-face crash helmet every time you're in a car.

If you have the money to spare and you don't mind the small inconvenience a VPN isn't a bad idea and it will make you even safer; but that doesn't mean you need a VPN.

You were just unlucky.

How many files have you up/downloaded over all the years you have been sharing? How many times have you been caught?

Aside from the fright, what penalty did you actually suffer?

Thanks, Sid.
I wasn't actually thinking about being caught by the police or something, but rather DAZ. If they have my IP they can easily compare it to the one from their site and see who I am.
A VPN is what I actually considered. I have GyberGhost and was planing to give it a try and see how it affects my uTorrent.

IPs aren't nearly as concretely identifying as they seem. As a terrible example of how not to do things, for a very long time, I was using the same username I have at Daz everywhere I torrented. Not even like it was similar, all my uploads and such were with the exact same username, from the exact same IP address, and a static IP address no less. I got two warning letters from I think a Fast and Furious and some Disney movie in the three years I was doing so. Yes, it's a breach of the EULA, but really, I don't think Daz cares all that much, as generally, it would be the responsibility of the PA to issue a DMCA, and they don't have direct access to your IP address in the first place. Could Daz block your account or something? Sure. But you could also argue (quite easily) that your IP address is insufficient proof of anything, and Daz wants your money, which they aren't getting if you can't buy from them. Same thing goes for any other merchant. Unless they will profit more from going after you (which would pretty much only apply to reselling sites, like all of Phuong's), it's financially smarter to turn a blind eye. Artists can pursue on their own, but they have to jump through considerably more hoops to get any information, and they are as diverse as we are in how much they care or are willing to go after people.

Thanks for putting me on point... You are correct. I got nothing. From articles I read I would have continued to get nothing. I guess it's a personal thing with me... I got caught, so I must have been sloppy somehow...

Thought I had replied to this. Will do so now as it's a good question.

So I guess what you're saying is that you've registered on the Daz site from home, without using a proxy/vpn. And I'm guessing as it's a online store you've also given them some credit card details, and therefore your identity. And that you want to upload here some of the content you have purchased/downloaded from there?

[That's a lot of assumptions so I'll wait to see if they're correct (and if you're still interested) before going further.]

Yes, correct.
I understand it's not in their interest to ban me from their store, but I was just wondering if someone had any problems with them (DAZ).
