"I used to use DHT, until I heard it could be used to track you so I stopped using it and now I only use Trackers."

"I used to use DHT, without any problems, but I stopped using it because I heard that it slows download speeds to almost nothing."

You really haven't thought any of that through.

I assume, since you haven't bothered to provide any source, that what you read was referring to this recent study which explained in detail how DHT is begin used to track people.

It is a genuinely impressive piece of work but it doesn't reveal anything which anyone who ever thought about it hadn't been assuming anyway. It is also worth pointing out that the authors are selling a "dynamic blocklist" product based on their research. That doesn't invalidate it, but it does raise questions re. the seriousness of their conclusions.

DHT, like trackers, is used to track. Tracking is necessary in a P2P system (otherwise you would have to connect to a random selection of the hundreds of millions of torrent clients around the world in the vague hope that they might have what it is you are looking for, which simply would not work). Since tracking exists, it can be and is exploited. But you cannot "opt out" of being tracked, unless you stop torrenting altogether. And while DHT (like trackers) can be exploited to poison swarms, for the most part (like trackers) it isn't. If you ever suffered from such attacks, you would know. That you haven't suffered from them, implies that you needn't worry about them. If they ever do become a significant problem, there are countermeasures but they're not worth worrying about at this point.]

ok what i heard it is now being used by mppa to gather ips that are downloading a specific movie and in conjunction with comcast as of now they are sending out dmca letters to users that are downloading that movie .
also they are using bots to flood the connection which will cause next to nothing download speed this only affects utorrent and bittorrent from what ive heard ....
other clients are not affected for some reason coding i would gather....

this is not the artical i read but heres 2 of them
they are older ones....

Dear Comcast High-Speed Internet Subscriber:

Comcast has received a notification by a copyright owner, or its authorized agent, reporting an alleged infringement of one or more copyrighted works made on or over Comcast's High-Speed Internet service. The copyright owner has identified the Internet Protocol ('IP') address associated with your Service account at the time as the source of the infringing works. The works identified by the copyright owner in its notification are listed below.
Evidentiary Information:
Infringed Work: The Divide

there are others on torrent freak about this and google it theres more.....

this is why i asked ...
i will not quit torrents for any reason as my give a s**t is broken
this would not be my first rodeo with the black suits with Zero sense of humor showing up at my door...
last time was for taking out 3 al-quada web sites seems theres more of them "home land sec." there then terrorists go figure....
and no i dont hide why bother if im on someones aruse its because you connected with me first or attacked someone i know.....
however with the letters being sent it makes me wonder if using the dht is safe since others with ill intent are after those of us trying to have a little fun.....

So?

Whether you knew it or not they have been doing that for over a decade in the case of trackers and for a considerable period of time in the case of DHT.

Even if you have spent the past several years removing all the trackers from every torrent you have downloaded, and not received any infringement notices, and assumed that the former was the reason for the latter; the only difference is that now you know it isn't. Either way, ignorant or not, you still haven't received any infringement notices.

They do that with all ISPs not just Comcast and, again, they have been doing it for many years.

Poisoning is not new. It is not limited to DHT. It is not limited to BitTorrent/uTorrent (though a specific variant of it could be). It is, quite obviously, not affecting you. It isn't a serious problem even when it happens. And it is not something you are powerless against if it ever does happen.

I suspected that is what you were referring to. It is sensationalist scaremongering based on the research I linked to.

It is as safe today as it was yesterday, and it is as safe as trackers (and most likely safer, because the hurdles are higher).
