Creating Self-Seeding Torrents

Quote:You don't need to use initial/super seeding at all, you can seed as normal, initial/super seeding helps very little actually, with the modern upload and download speeds.

I'm glad you (who wish to remain nameless) mentioned that. It is a common misunderstanding.

Initial seeding has nothing to do with speeds. It's purpose is to minimize the amount of data you upload and the difference it makes is significant (and easily observed). With normal seeding you will rarely if ever see peers reaching 100% before you have uploaded 160%. With initial seeding you will almost invariably see peers reaching 100% before you have uploaded 130%.

Sure, you don't need to use it but seeding less will make it more likely that you will feel like supporting the torrents you have uploaded for a longer period of time, and feel more capable of uploading more torrents.

Why have more stress in your life when you can have less stress AND achieve better results?

One other thing which just occurred to me, as I've just banned someone for it: blatantly inflated seed numbers will get you banned (and all of your torrents deleted). It's one of the largest and brightest red flags that will call unwanted moderator attention down upon you.

On the issue of seeding season packs versus individual shows: I know some people prefer the former. Why's that the case?

When the objective is creating torrents that a succession of other people will seed for years: season packs win hands down.

[Except when episodes are airing of course, when any attempted season pack would be incomplete and therefore doomed as soon as the next episode aired;
or where the entire series has ended, in which case a series pack will survive even longer than individual season packs; for the same reasons season packs outlast individual episodes.]

There are a number of reasons:

1. Convenience. People will choose to download one torrent rather than 10/12/26/however many episodes there are. Even when they are looking to fill out missing episodes in an existing collection, one stop shopping is easier. [EDIT: and less risky--if e01 in a season pack plays satisfactorily on your setup, you can be as sure as sure can be that the other episodes will do too. But when you're downloading each ep. from different downloaders and/or encoders then you cannot be so sure.]

And remember the bottom line--you can only get seeders if you get downloaders first.

2. A larger torrent will take longer to download. The longer something takes to download, the longer it will take to seed back to a custom set or default ratio. Some people will hit and run of course, but some won't--and those who stay (by deliberate choice or because they simply don't know enough to change the defaults on their torrent client) will therefore stay for a longer period of time when the torrent is larger.

A kind of side issue here is that people who wish to stream will generally opt for individual episodes. Since those people are hit and runners the fact that they will avoid your swarm is actually a plus. [The corollary being that whenever you upload a single episode it's correspondingly more likely to be raped.]

Days of seeding are more important than amounts of seeding. It's better for the long life of a torrent for someone to seed it for a week than it is for them to seed back quickly if that means they're out of there in one day.

3. Reliability--a seeded season/series pack provides a greater degree of certainty that you will be able to complete downloading a set of files than a set of individual episode torrents does. Just look at any such set--some of the episodes will have more seeders and some less--obviously the ones with less seeds are likely to die sooner, and that can set off a domino effect. Nobody wants to get into watching a series only to find they can't obtain a certain episode. So unavailability of a single episode can put people off downloading any episodes, and have a cascading and devastating effect on the set as a whole.

Generally it's the later episodes which have smaller swarms and are the first to die, because series lose viewers throughout. Where people are downloading episodes they might watch the first three and then decide the show is not for them and not even bother downloading any of the later episodes. If they've downloaded a season pack, there is a greater chance that even if they do get bored they will still have downloaded the remaining episodes. [The opposite situation, when series audiences grow, doesn't counteract that effect in the way you might think. People who join a series will often catch up on missed episodes--making their effect on swarms essentially the same as those who have started on day 1 and continued. The end result of one set of downloaders (the guys who stick from day one and the latecomers) downloading all episodes and a second set of downloaders stopping partway through is that the later episodes of all series, no matter how successful, will be downloaded less than the earlier ones.

Should I add tracker URLs to my torrents? I currently only release on TPB, so there would be no trackers to add?

TPB ignores and discards any and all trackers you add so, at least while this is the only place you are uploading to, adding trackers would be a waste of time.
