China opposes ‘illegal’ sanctions against Russia by United States and its allies
Published: March 2, 2022
Beijing neither supports, nor will be taking part in the imposition of, financial sanctions imposed by the West and its allies against Russia, according to China’s top banking regulator.
Instead, it will strive to maintain “normal” trade and financial ties with both Moscow and Kyiv, said Guo Shuqing, chairman of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission.
His comments at a press conference on Wednesday supported those made a day earlier by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who also expressed China’s “hope to promote our normal trade” with the warring states after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Guo added that the impact those sanctions will have on the Chinese economy, and its financial sector, were not entirely clear.
“But on the whole, we don’t think it will have much of an impact in the future, since our economy and finances are very sound and resilient,” he said.
“Speaking of financial sanctions, we do not approve of them, especially the unilateral ones, since their effects are not good and do not have much legal basis,” Guo said. “We will not participate in such sanctions, and we will continue to maintain normal economic, trade and financial exchanges with relevant parties.”
Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also reaffirmed on Wednesday that the country “firmly opposes any illegal unilateral sanctions”.
“Sanctions have never been a fundamental and effective way to solve the problem. They will only bring serious difficulties to the economy and the livelihoods of people in the relevant countries, further intensifying division and confrontation,” Wang Wenbin said at a press conference, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.
“China and Russia will continue to carry out normal trade cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.”
Furthermore, he said: “We demand that relevant parties, in handling the Ukraine issue and relations with Russia, not harm the legitimate rights and interests of China and other sides concerned.”

Turkey does not plan to impose sanctions on Russia
Published: March 2, 2022
Ankara does not plan to impose sanctions in Russia in order to maintain a channel for dialogue, Turkish Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told CNN Turk on Tuesday.
"We need to act based on our country’s priorities. There should be a party capable of holding talks with Russia. Who will talk with Russia if all the bridges are burned down? We don’t plan to impose sanctions so that we keep this channel open," he pointed out.
Kalin added that Ankara "does not intend to take measures that would harm" Turkey. "We maintain close relations in areas such as tourism, natural gas supplies and agriculture," he explained.
Besides, according to Edrogan’s spokesman, "the Montreux Convention has played a key role in maintaining peace and stability on the Black Sea." "We interpret the Montreux Convention in a way that allows us to prevent tensions from rising. We are also in consultations with the parties on this issue and we have informed everyone about it. We have so far received no requests," Kalin noted.

Russia receives Venezuela's 'strong support'
Published: March 1, 2022
In rare backing for Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday assured Vladimir Putin of his "strong support" in a telephone call, according to a Kremlin statement.
In the call initiated by Caracas, the Venezuelan leader also condemned "destabilizing actions of the United States and NATO" and spoke out against a Western campaign of "lies and disinformation," it said.
Dozens of people have been killed and nearly 680,000 have fled Ukraine since Putin ordered his troops into the country last week after failing to get guarantees that NATO will not expand its military alliance eastward.
In the call with Maduro, Putin insisted the objectives of the military assault were to "protect the civilian population" of the Donbass separatist region and to get Kiev to recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
It also sought to ensure a "neutral and non-nuclear" Ukrainian position towards Russia, said the statement.
After the call, Maduro published a message on Twitter with a photograph of him and Putin, and said he also told the Russian leader Venezuela was "in favor of understanding and dialogue as a way to preserve peace."
Venezuela, along with Cuba and Nicaragua -- all targets of United States sanctions -- are Latin American allies of Moscow.
