Best Alternative to photoshop

Some good suggestions here, the best alternatives in my opinion are GIMP and Photoscape. GIMP is kind of complicated to use, so if you're new to image editing I would use caution, but there's a lot of plugins, the community is pretty strong, and and it has a similiar performance to photoshop.

Photoscape is more for newbies, it's easier to use and start off with, but it doesn't have as good performance as GIMP and photoshop. It depends a lot on your skills and your preferences.

Theres a few other alternatives as well, but that's up to you to read and decide what's best for you. I told you my 2 favourite applications and why.

Paint.net has a plugin which loads psd files, although it does not support everything 100%

I don't know what is "best" when it comes to these questions, and I am always humble (BULLSHIT ALERT!)

Just for everyone's information, Libreoffice (www.libreoffice.org) and Apache Open Office (www.openoffice.org) both have a drawing program as part of their respective productivity suites.

Give it a try sometime. Sometimes I use it to draw diagrams. Still, it's probably off anyone's radar, but try it.

If you're into drawing diagrams, this is the bomb (still not "best," but excellent!)! It features many types of diagrams, from electronics to computers to just basic shapes. I don't know if you can design your own templates, but try it.

The author admitted that the ultimate motivation of this work was Microsoft Visio. Well, a little humble for making a great program even if it is misplaced.

Like Sid said, it depends what you are trying to do, but a good free app that has many of the same features of PS is 'Krita'. I use it instead of PS sometimes.
