Netsheild

       Block malware only

        Block malware,tracking and Ads

 Alternate routing    yes  or no

Should i exclude any IP addresses ?

What is the best Protocol setting?

       Wireguard or Wireguard   TCP
         OpenVPN  UDP
          OpenVPN TCP
            Stealth

And should any settings on my chrome book be changed as well?

If anyone actually read all this and leaves comments to help me out I THANK YOU  in advance

Okay, I'm going to be honest with you.  I think that Chromebooks are terrible and years ago I had one at one point and I had a look at it and I thought it was literally the worst thing I've ever seen...

ProtonVPN that's totally fine they check out good.  Any of the settings if you need help then look on YouTube or just have a search on a search engine to find people talking about those settings I'm sure there's lots and lots of information...

The settings are there to protect you so it's up to you and your personal choice if you use them.  When I got into all this I didn't have a teacher I just figured it all out myself and that's what you have to do, work on it yourself because nobody is going to teach you all this you just learn from your mistakes as you go along...

If it were me I'd get rid of the Chromebook absolutely terrible things they are I was in the possession of one exactly 9 years ago and it was terrible then.

It's all personal choice really you should have it all how you want and do it your own way because doing it somebody else's way is no good.  In regards to myself I do things my own way and it just works really good for me but has taken me ages.

You might be new now but in 2 months you won't be so just read whatever you can people can help but it's a long and strong learning curve which you have to take a journey along.  Which choices you make are the ones which are important and the path you take...

Hold on a second, their E-Mail service had proven to be very much UNanonymous after some guy being arrested about a year ago: https://www.theregister.com/2021/09/07/p...ess_police and I'd bet my ass their VPN is no different, and paying money for THAT?
I've never used any of their services and I wouldn't use any centralized or commercialized VPN for privacy, it's all a big load of crap IMO, if you ask me I'd say you're better off using ShadowSocks or at least decentralized VPNs where servers are hosted by people, SS being the best option here again IMO

In this article, I have just had a quick look at it.  There is no information about what this person has done, it just said they were running a blog.  We know, based on the story, nothing about what this person has done so there's no information regarding what law was broken.  I think you're jumping the gun a bit, I said that ProtonVPN check out just fine and I wasn't telling any lies.  They are totally fine and their HQ is based in that country so if you want to break file sharing laws it's fine, I don't see any harm in doing that from using ProtonVPN.  If anything your post is misleading so I wouldn't take any of that information much seriously.  Very much like you said in your post that it's a big load of crap, I happen to agree you've got a point there but I am more referring to your advice on the matter, not on the actual VPN in question.

I wasn't talking about piracy alone, of course they're not gonna give your data to the police just because you were pirating, noone will even come looking for you if you were just pirating and using a VPN. I was talking more about general privacy, this news kind of gives you the gist of what it's all about, they don't want no trouble for their company (understandable from the business & profit POV) so if you were doing some nasty illegal stuff online and happened to have been tracked to their VPN service they'll gladly hand your data if asked 'nicely', in this sense no centralized VPN is safe or anonymous since the big companies can and most likely are collecting your data for various pruposes, one of them is if the police comes looking for you. IMO it's much safer to use a decentralized VPN -at least-, things like SoftEther (which is open-source on top of that), in case Shadowsocks is just hard to use for someone or they can't afford renting a VPS to run their own server on it.

As for Protonmail: they're based in Sweden and by their law they HAVE to obey and hand out/start logging the data if asked, which is a priori a threat to one's privacy. But how big that threat is defined by what activities they're involved in and how much illegal they are.

Protonmail are not based in Sweden, they are based in Switzerland. Maybe next time before you start making statements, check your information first before you post. Your views are simply misleading like I said. If anything your statements are hypocritical in how the law works. As far as I can see, using a VPN service like ProtonVPN is just fine and that is what this thread is about as mentioned by the original poster.

Switzerland or Sweden, you can blame me all you want for taking such info off the tip of my head, the point stands that such a company has to obey law of the country they're based in, if they weren't they wouldn't be around for long. That's why individuals who need real privacy (not the kind of privacy when noone's looking for you in hopes that noone will start looking for you, kind of the same mentality as "I have nothing to hide" lol) would never use things like ProtonVPN or their E-Mail. There are much better E-Mail services as well targeted for real privacy and anonymity, mostly the darkweb ones. You can use ProtonVPN for Torrenting but same applies for a simple http or socks4/5 proxy servers. In addition to all of that I don't see a point to pay for such service when a higher level of privacy can be had for free

In this day and age, if you want the best then you pay for it and that's the best service available. The free route might be okay for people, like yourself, but doesn't suit everybody. Thanks for taking your time to post here in this thread and help the original poster but for the third time now you are giving out bad advice so I'm just pointing that out again. If the original poster wanted to ask for more help then maybe they might post further and ask you. Otherwise I think this thread is now done. Like I said, take the free route and you're in for a long bumpy ride. Take the paid route and you'll get a better service that works really good and that's the end of the matter as said in public on many occasions by many different people on review sites and all over the internet. If possible take some time and then go and find the next thread to post on as your message here is clearly what wasn't wanted but I'd already offered the best advice on the matter and that is that, the end of the topic.

I wasn't trying to offend you or say that your advice is bad, different strokes for different folks, some prefer paid VPNs for whatever reason, if you're not a paranoid or care little about your data being leaked out or handed over to the police because you did something a paid or any VPN would work, but I (as well as tons of other people) have no problem using Shadowsocks, sure it might seem a tad complex for some but there are tons of tutorials online so even a 5 year old can figure it out, then if it's still too complex SoftEther is a very good alternative to any paid VPN as the servers are hosted by people and there are lots and lots of them from each and every country, plus it supports OVPN IPSec and a bunch of other stuff as well, Public Gate Relay plugin allows to connect to any server without searching for it on the web, it's basically the server-browser

It's up to oneself to assess the risks and take whatever they think is right, I merely stated my POV and again I don't see any reason to pay for something when there's lots of free alternatives out there which some of them even work better, but that's just me
