Trying this, by the way https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-Just-Ha...ine-Before

I was also experimenting with VMs.

However, when Warcraft III starts in a Windows 7 VM, it crashes the computer after loading the opening Blizzard logo cinematic.

My question is, for virtual machines, would adding RAM and investing in a souped-up video card increase compatibility?
-Try older directX and vcredist(and dotnet).
It's probably directX related as BoxerLara intuits as well. Newer directX versions (as shipped with win7) omit older dlls needed by old games. There is a web installer on microsofts website that gives you the full package with complete backwards compatibility -> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download...aspx?id=35
Is there an offline installer?

For some reason, the VM does not go online and will reject the installer you named.

Not that I know of

I know you can find numerous versions of older DX packages on those softpedia filehippo sites. But you don't know which module is missing, and those are likely to conflict with win7's native dx11.

Sounds like you have some tinkering to do...

EDIT: found an official offline installer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download...px?id=8109 (june 2010 tho)
Well, I did find an offline counterpart to the web installer, and now the game is telling me that it can't find DirectX 8.1.

Furthermore, after that message, it's asking for the disc, which it's not supposed to since I am using the patch that takes out the CD check.
Same one I posted in the edit?

Sounds like it did mess up win7's native DX... The offline release is 11 years old

Here's what I'd do.

1. revert the DX offline installer if possible, otherwise new VM
2. Fix the internet connectivity problem (see here: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=82661 ) and run the webinstaller
3. If the problem persists, try an XP VM instead
The DirectX runtimes didn't work (still crashing), so I will try VCRedist.

However, it does work with opengl, but the image quality (at least in my VM) is shit. I can't even see the cursor when playing Warcraft III.

Back to square one.

Which win7 are you using? I had this same problem (or similar) with fallout and baldurs game (original pre 2000 versions) and the DX webinstaller fixed it. That was after fucking several VMs up with botched DX installers from dubious sources...

If you are at square one, do like I said: Make new VM, fix internets, run webinstaller
I'm using a bootlegged Russian Windows 7 edition, one that lets you choose which edition, say Home or Pro or Ultimate.

Right now, I'm using a pro.

I know what you mean, ill88eagle, computers suck cock when things don't work.

Well, at least the software is free of charge, so I can't complain.

I'll make a new VM.
