In 2004, a satellite detects a mysterious heat bloom beneath Bouvetoya, an island
about one thousand miles off the coast of Antarctica. Wealthy industrialist Charles
Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) discovers through thermal imaging that there is a
pyramid buried 2000 feet beneath the ice. Weyland wants to claim it for his
multinational communications company, Weyland Industries, and assembles a team of
experts to go investigate. The team includes archaeologists, linguistic experts
drillers, mercenaries, and a guide named Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan).

As a Predator ship reaches Earth's orbit, it blasts a shaft through the ice towards
the source of the heat bloom. When the team arrives at the abandoned whaling station
above the heat source, they find the shaft and descend beneath the ice. They locate
the mysterious pyramid and begin to explore it, finding evidence of a pre-historic
civilization and what appears to be a sacrificial chamber filled with human
skeletons with ruptured rib cages.

One day, Léon sees Mathilda Lando (Natalie Portman), a twelve-year-old girl who is
smoking a cigarette and sporting a black eye. Mathilda lives with her dysfunctional
family in an apartment down the hall. Her abusive father and self-absorbed stepmother
have not noticed that Mathilda stopped attending class at her school for troubled
girls. Mathilda's father (Michael Badalucco) attracts the ire of corrupt DEA agents
who have been paying him to stash cocaine in his apartment. After they discover he has
been cutting the cocaine to keep some for himself, DEA agents storm the building, led
by sharply dressed drug addict Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman). During the raid
Stansfield quickly becomes unhinged and murders Mathilda's entire family one by one
while Mathilda is out shopping. When Mathilda returns, she realizes what has happened
just in time to continue down the hall, where she desperately knocks on her neighbours

her next-door neighbor, a retired Aviator who, over the course of the summer
shares with her the story of a boy called "the Little Prince", whom he supposedly
encountered in a desert when his plane crashed. The Mother is angered when she
discovers their relationship as it is distracting her daughter from her important
work, but the Little Girl keeps visiting the Aviator behind her Mother's back
The Aviator finally completes the story of The Little Prince, and the Little Girl

Upon his release from prison, well-meaning thief Scott Lang moves in with his old cellmate
Luis. While visiting his daughter Cassie unannounced, Lang is rebuked by his former wife
Maggie and her police-detective fiancé, Paxton, for not providing child support. Unable
to hold a job because of his criminal record, Lang agrees to join Luis' crew and commit
a burglary. Lang breaks into a house and cracks its safe, but only finds what he believes
to be an old motorcycle suit, which he takes home. After trying the suit on, Lang
accidentally shrinks himself to the size of an insect. Terrified by the experience, he
returns the suit to the house, but is arrested on the way out. Pym, the homeowner, visits
Lang in jail and smuggles the suit into his cell to help him break out...

Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) was born into Abnegation, which runs the
government. Her father, Andrew Prior (Tony Goldwyn) serves on the ruling
council along with the head of Abnegation, Marcus Eaton (Ray Stevenson)
Beatrice takes her test with a Dauntless woman named Tori Wu (Maggie Q) as
her proctor. Her results show attributes of multiple factions, meaning she is
Divergent. Her divergence includes Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. Tori
records her results as Abnegation and warns her to keep the true result a
secret, saying that because Divergents can think independently and the
government therefore cannot control them, they are considered threats to
the existing social order.
