new antipiracy tactic (seed partially and leave incomplete)
#1
i was wondering would the studios resort to posting partial torrents and then leaving before it completes leaving we users with incomplete torrents?

it makes sense since tpb scripts and mods catch and delete the fakes including password protected zip files.

posting a torrent that is valid and is a real playable content would not look suspicious so the mods and scripts would not delete it but what happens if the seeder abandons the torrent at say 50 or even 70% just to waste our bandwidth .

would the studios do such a thing?

These won't give studios (or companies) solid ground to sue anybody under copyright infringement. Because no one actually download the (full) movie.

even if a studio uploaded an entire movie, they wouldn't be able to sue since they themselves posted their own property for p2p distribution... they wouldn't even be able to sue for part of a movie.

op is assuming that people will just sit around waiting for a torrent to finish downloading when the majority of users will just dump the torrent, post a comment indicating that the uploader never finished uploading the torrent, find a legit torrent to download.

op also does not realize that there are already gazillions of incomplete torrents floating around that were at one point legitimate uploads.

it's a fact of life. could they try it? sure. have they tried it? yup... a porn company troll known as prenda or whatever to be somewhat precise. is it worth it? nope. what happened in court? judge no amused... fist became a verb.

attempted infringement   just like if a person gets shot and survives then the charge would be attempted murder

also police does stings with real drugs i.e. they would not use rock candy as the bait they would use real meth.

it is called hiring a hitman  or giving legal immunity to original poster  just like someone may hire someone to burn a building or murder someone so they dont take the fall.

you would be surprised what studios would do for example

if orrin hatch got his way studios would hack into your system and delete their stuff.

They may do it to find downloaders and then persue them for "speculative" damages, ie send them a demand for cash, a lot of people will pay up lol.

I doubt any case would get far against a competent defense.

If the rights holder posts a torrent of their content, they pretty much are giving a free pass to everyone else for that content.

Of course, some judges still don't understand the technology so I suppose any outcome is really possible.

a lá John Steele @ Prenda Big Grin

That's exactly what he/they did and they made a shedload of cash from speculative invoicing.. because most goombas don't mount any defence against 'sexually deviant' downloads.
Granted Prenda/Steele may end up eating the shit they handed out, but it's still taking a long time and plenty of easily (illegally) earned cash is still in their bank accounts.

Assume the worst, hope for the best, and be ready for whatever the scum do next.. because they are and they will.
