how to make upgraded video/audio mixes
#1
does anyone have tutorials, advice or instructions on how to rip audio and add/sync it to a different video file?  i have searched on this forum but haven't found much.  i apologize if i missed it somewhere.  i have superior quality copies of many mst3k/rifftrax/cinematic titanic/the film crew/mads movies and would like to make upgrades.
thanks

This is the guide that I started learning how to sync off of. I've since streamlined my own process significantly, but it's a lot of short-hand that really wouldn't make sense to anyone who isn't already familiar to the subject matter.

If all you're doing is adding an audio track to a "superior" video file, you don't even need to "rip" anything and would just need one free program.  Just drag everything into MKVToolNix Gui and uncheck the elements you don't want in your final file (like say, the old video track since you're apparently merging it up with the new video track).  Hit start multiplexing and you have a brand new file in, no kidding, about 10 seconds.  The only time you might get into some weirdness is if the two video files were encoded at differing framerates (I'll never understand why Handbrake's default isn't to keep the original framerate of the file you re-encode) but MKVToolNix even has an option to stretch/shrink the audio if you see a little audio/video drift.  Now if your video files are differing lengths, as in they cut out a ton of the original scenes from the original movie for their riff, then it becomes a little bit more involved.

here's a quote from a post kitcastuff made once. budgetbits has also given me some good advice

kitcastuff Wrote:To those "requesting" called shot spec syncs:

Get the just the jokes mp3 and the VERY important READ ME file
Choose a program to extract the audio from the original movie file: VLC can do this and the instructions are widely available.
Open the extracted film audio in Audacity
Drag and drop the riff into Audacity beneath the original movie waveform.
Lock the main film audio.
Cut off the rifftrax welcome section (many paste this to the end of the track)
Slide the riff track left and right to correctly sync with the original track.
Use the timings given for the disembaudio cues to help line up the tracks.
If the riff audio has problems with syncing to your source, small cuts or silences may be necessary
Perform any wanted compression or other alterations to the tracks.
Duck
Render
Extract audio
Open MKVTool Nix (with GUI) and open the original movie file.
Drag and drop the audio version with riff in the sources (add .srt caption here if wanted)
Set riffed audio as default.
Check destination
Start Multiplexing
Note: The are no paid programs in this process.

There are tutorials all over the web for all of this.

Enjoy!

That's pretty much exactly it.  The only little addition I'd add for "style points" is in MKVToolNix Gui when you set the riffed audio as the default track, I always drag it up to be the new first audio track detected AND set the language or the riff audio from <unknown> to English<eng>...I'm a big Plex guy and my library is set to play the first english track in a movie so if I didn't do that last part, I'd always have to manually select the riff track even if it was the default.  And hey, why not slap a label like MST3K/Rifftrax/etc on that audio track while you're there as well

It's also a good tool to take audio tracks out and save some space. I also use Plex and prefer Rifftrax to be in the TV section, and movies in another, so I'll take out any non-rifftrax audio. Usually my movie tastes don't overlap with Rifftrax so it works for me.
