The fact that people take time out of their day to upload anything at all isn't good enough for you?
If you don't like the format, don't download it.

If most of the movies are not already being uploaded in mp4 format then mp4 is not the main standard for video.
Try to avoid contradicting yourself while whining pathetically.

MP4/x264 seems to be the current standard. But even avi/xvid is much more preferable than those horrible mkv things in spite of the size and quality I *always* take an mp4/x264 version, usually 720p to save disk, if I get a chance, so that my regular BSplayer understands it -- tends to flutter with external subs otherwise. (Okay, I have a 27" HD monitor, like that means anything, Jitenderg)

It's your codecs... No codec pack works awesome after fresh install. And it really doesn't much matter what the compression is, AVI/MP4/MKV/etc, the quality of the file is bitrate, resolution and frames per second. If you have issues with one versus the other, you need to tweak your codecs. Also, x264 is not the only big-time Mp4 encoder, VC-1 is just as popular. Part of tweaking your codec will be to enable HW acceleration.
Or VLC media player will play everything, and you do not need codecs, but not always the best performance.

AVI/MP4/MKV/ are CONTAINERS and have no control over quality that is done but the CODECs and as js99912 said the bitrate and frames per second.
At current time the best setup is H264 video and AAC/AC3 audio in a MP4 container.

MP4 vs. MKV is a bogus argument. It takes about a minute to convert an .mkv file to an .mp4 (or vice versa), with 0% quality loss.

convert? it doesnt do more than editing the header to mp4?
