Your Favourite Media Player

What is your favourite media player?

It doesn't have to be just for Windows, OSX, or GNU/Linux. What do you like?

I'll start: I like to use Windows Media Player 12 for Windows 7 and VLC/Banshee for video/audio (respectively) for GNU/Linux.

Windows Media Player 12 seems to be pretty good for all purpose media consumption, but, for starters, I use it only because it comes with the OS. Yet, in conjunction with the K-Lite Codec Pack, I would say that I am happy with the player and, while I did come across many worthy players, its minimalist interface and ability to player more files won me over

VLC is what I use for GNU/Linux. I like it because everything I want, such as, the endless options of the audio/video properties, the endless possibilities abilities for playing media, and both at the convenience of the user. The program is fast too, just make sure that you don't open many programs. If you do get VLC for GNU/Linux, make sure to download the libdvdcss2 software library. That way, you can play DVDs from all regions, for the most part.

Sorry, night time here; partly comatose.

Now an explanation: I dual-boot my computer; installing Windows 7 and Linux.

What's your favourite player?

i like wmp because it's super easy to adjust hue/saturation/brightness/contrast, mpchc because it's super easy to jump from key frame to key frame, and vlc because it can play live streams and record them on the fly.

foobar2000 - it really whips winamp's ass - as music player

as for video, BSPlayer, for the subtitle searcher with several sources, although recently I started using bomi which is really lightweight and also includes subtitle searcher but with fewer sources.

I use KMPlayer. I used to use BSPlayer, but got rid of it for some reason. I don't remember why Smile

Don't get a new version of KMPlayer though, it's now full of ads and other crap. Get an older version. It was sold to Pandora during version 2.9 something or the other. I use 3.0.0.1439. No ads or bloat yet in that version, after that it practically turned into malware, but before that, it is awesome, and it plays pretty much everything I've ever tried. May need to add a codec or 2 for some of the more obscure stuff, but otherwise it works great, with tons of useful options and a good UI.

The Sasami2k player was easily the best player ever made. Best UI in the history of UI's. Unfortunately it hasn't been developed for over 10 years Sad

WMPanynumber is shit. VLC is shit.

For audio in GNU/Linux, I use Banshee. Just as I use WMP12 as it came with Windows 7, I use Banshee for Linux Mint as it came with the OS.

I did encounter Rhythmbox and Clementine, but Banshee, while it is discontinued, it organises the playlists nicely. I had no real reason to replace the Banshee software at all.

I really like Media Player Classic: Home Cinema (MPC-HC) for videos.

AIMP has proven to be a decent alternative to Winamp music player.

I don't stream/download while watching (my plan is cheap) so VLC isn't really needed; WMP is decent but too much "hit play and sit back".

Currently on MPC. Screen controls and subtitles are a must here, even if a little clumsy; plus ff/rw controls are good.
Sadly development ended last year, a pitty talented developers won't go thru all the trouble just for fun.
A fork called MPC Black Edition (short lived and ended even longer) added a much needed little make-up.

I don't play a lot of music, but WinAmp (long inactive) does the trick for me - Just for the visuals.

Am I wrong or developers are no longer into media players, at least for Windows? I've the feeling we may end out of innovation.
As a natural cicle, players will leave a saturated market and the best product becomes old, bloated, and estagnated. Even worse, it may become incorporated.

Update: MPC-BE is still going on GitHub. Time to check it out again.
