YIFY/ YTS Shuts Down Forever – The End of a Piracy Icon

Ten days ago the popular movie torrent site YTS stopped working.

The downtime raised concern among many BitTorrent users, not least because the site belongs to movie release group YIFY, which has dominated public BitTorrent sites for several years.

Today we can report that this reign has come to an end. YIFY and YTS have shutdown permanently, as predicted earlier this week.

A lot of information has been made available over the past several days and multiple sources have now confirmed that YTS and YIFY will not return. The entire operation has stopped which means that no new official YIFY movie releases will appear on any torrent site, anywhere.

TF has received additional explanatory details from trusted sources, but we have been asked not to reveal all of the information just yet. However, our sources confirm without doubt that the shutdown is permanent.

The operator of YTS/YIFY, meanwhile, remains silent.

The news marks the end of a remarkable era. YIFY first arrived on the scene in 2010 and the group has shared over 6,000 releases since.

The group’s website (YTS.to) also gained popularity in recent years. Earlier this year the operator informed TF that they had close to a million unique visitors per day, generating six million pageviews.

The YTS/YIFY shutdown doesn’t mean that piracy will end anytime soon, but it’s one of the most significant changes to the landscape in recent history. YIFY releases were consistently among the most-pirated movies, week after week.

In an interview in 2013, YIFY attributed this popularity to the presentation and consistency of its releases.

“I personally think that many people are following and downloading YIFY encodes due to the consistency we offer in our releasing. Everything from the consistent film cover art, to the information layout, and ultimately to the file-size of our encodes,” YIFY said.

“I believe this is important because people like stability and assurance with what they are downloading. By adding consistency to a reasonable file-size, we have filled a spot in the community, which seemingly has a lot of demand,” he added.

YIFY also played a crucial part as the primary movie supplier for many Popcorn Time forks. The size of the shutdown fallout will become apparent during the weeks to come.

Over the past several days many people have been misled by fake YIFY websites, Facebook accounts and impostors. These should not be trusted and are trying to profit from the confusion.

That is so sad. I have always relayed on Yify for HD content and their consistency. They also upload classic movies which are had to find anywhere else. I am deeply saddened. I hope they haven't permanently shut down. Or something better and bigger will come out of this trials they are experiencing. However my worry is, will all those over 6000 torrents disappear too? Moreover will they lack seeders? Please clarify for us if you can. Thanks

The saddest thing is: there will be pirates who rejoice over that news. Dumb fucks. Yify are to be saluted for the contribution they have made. I wish them well.

Anyway, the King is dead, long live the King. Who will the next big name be? Remember it is not just about highest quality. As it says above, "consistency and a reasonable file-size," are the keys to building a following.

How long will it take for them to establish themselves? From past experience, we're in for several months of uncertainty.

The main thing to remember is: stay away from anything new with even a hint of Yify about it from now on--there WILL be scammers taking advantage of the mass confusion.

EDIT. No, the torrents won't disappear--we wouldn't delete them from TPB even if asked by Yify themselves. And seeders won't disappear overnight either--they're good torrents, well supported and people will continue to download and support them for a good while yet.

It's a really saddest news. YIFY is a big name and will get top place in the torrents history. Respect!
Thanks, Ernesto for your hard work to keep us informed.

P.S.
http://www.yifysubtitles.com its still online.

Note that yifysubtitles, which may or may not be a legitimate site now/in future, is NOTHING TO DO WITH YIFY

Of course there aren't fucking records kept. One server theft and the MAFIAA have all the information they need to take out all of the worlds greatest sharers? You're nuts.

Besides that, quality is subjective--a "reasonable" file-size to you may be ridiculously small to downloaders in bandwidth rich countries and impossibly large to those in bandwidth poor countries--so any ranking of uploaders, by us or anyone else, would be no more valid than yours.

Skulls (on this site; similar schemes on other sites) give you an idea of particularly trustworthy uploaders. It is up to you, and rightfully so, to decide which of those produce files that meet your personal requirements.

The "next yify" won't become apparent for several months so if you can't handle uncertainty, or aren't willing to join the hunt, just wait a while. You're not going to die if aren't able to download Spectre by next weekend.

i heard they were served papers this is the reason i was told for the shutdown..
chalk it up to copyright infringement abuse yup there abusing the system for more hollywood greed.
its a big bummer to see them leave like this the quality and reliability was almost to perfection with a killer size for 720 and 1080 movies
well i guess all we can do is hope some of the guys/girl left get together and form another torrent site
we wish them well in there endeavors and hope they grace us with something new and better .......... Smile

"hope some of the guys/girl left get together and form another torrent site"

It was most likely the torrent site that caused them problems--sites provide central static targets for lawyers, hackers and other criminals.

Rippers/encoders survive longer by NOT exposing themselves unnecessarily. They're doubly wise to focus on the quality of their product and leave the distribution to others.

RIP YTS.

Without you guys, there will be a void of newbie-friendly movie download sites even as TPB attempts to fill that void.

Thank you for the kindness and you will be missed.
