When should I have my VPN on?
#1
Friends,
I have ExpressVPN and am new to the concept. I need to know when exactly when I should have it on to protect myself: if I'm on PirateBay, if I am actively seeding or downloading, if I have BitTorrent open? Help!

It depends on why you are using a VPN in the first place.

If you are simply using it to avoid getting notices from your ISP, then you only need it when you are running your bittorrent client.

If you are using it because TPB is blocked where you live, then you need it in order to browse TPB. Of course, you can also do that with tor browser for free.

I would suggest as long as you want to continue your activity, whether you are downloading from torrent if it can cause you legal issues, or if you just want to access the site because it is geo-restricted. You will need to keep the vpn on for that purpose. Once you know are done with it, you can safely turn it off and work as you did before a vpn.
This is what i do doing torrents.

Why can't you just use it as much as possible? With modern vpn's your speed doesn't even suffer that much.

I think there is no harm keeping your vpn on for as much time you want. You can do it as per your wish.

Set it boot to start and leave it on.

OFF your ISP can see everything you do

ON all they see is local traffic no what or to where

If you have option turn on Disconnect local net if VPN drops connection

Also be sure and I like to keep check on DNS leaks VPN and Torrent there are many site to google

DNS LEAK
DNS TORRENT LEAK

True, but then why should yo use it all the time ?  To me, having an encrypted connection when u don't need to "not doing any priacy type banking or anything, just stadard we surfing" seems silly to go over encryption when u don't need to protect anything..

What if u'r just browsing web sites, why should you care who sees your tracking page to page ? chances are they know anyway.. Your ISP wouldn't but any other tracking would after it leaves the VPN.

so not really important as using VPN for its intended purpose by banking, (already over SSL), or torrents (when downloading movies etc)

If I am seeding, say my own torrents, or copyright which has long gone like Amiga stuff, then i don't use VPN's...  Less likely they would target 30 ear old stuff than new releases....  Its like saying copyright holders would target black & white movies more..... Tongue

Well, encrypting non-sensitive stuff is important as well. If not for anything else, then for diverting attention from encrypted information. If only illegal or sensitive information is encrypted then there is clear target for more sophisticated attacks and analysis, on the other hand, if your chatting with grandma is encrypted then attacker doesn't know what to pick and he cannot simply scan it all as he could non-encrypted information.
Privacy is another point. The first thing is, if you are not behind NAT sufficiently far away (e.g. you have public IP), everybody can see what are you looking for. Even if you are behind NAT and whatnot, people on your LAN can eavesdrop on your traffic, so you might want your traffic to be encrypted up until it reaches your computer.
The privacy point is individual choice of each of us, but I would argue it is our collective responsibility to encrypt as much as we can in order to guarantee anonymity to those who need, not only want, to encrypt.

Encrypt all the things, all the times.
