What's your take on posting links to other torrents in comments.

I tried searching for this topic..can't find the answer in another thread. However, if this has been addressed, please feel free to move this post.

What is your take on the following situation:

Let's say that somebody creates Torrent A and uploads it. Then, later on, somebody else creates and uploads Torrent B that is very similar to torrent A. The second person leaves a comment on Torrent A's listing with a link to Torrent B, derating Torrent A and claiming the second Torrent B is superior.

Personally, I think this is rude/selfish. If you feel you created a better torrent, then upload it, and let the uploaders search and find it themselves. You do not need to leave derogatory comments on the first torrent. The person creating the first torrent spent lots of hard work ripping, encoding, and uploading the torrent, and trying to redirect their traffic to your torrents via a comment on their page is just cold.

What do you think?

i think it's mostly the attitude it is posted with, and whether there was a legitimate reason.
in your example it's pretty much completely rude. when i was a moderator i would have deleted comments like that.
but there are also valid reasons to link another torrent, even if it's your own. maybe it's something you are passionate about and your torrent has something else to offer that you wanted to show the uploader, or maybe the torrent you comment on is long since dead. it's usually pretty clear when the intent is malicious/rude and you're just trying to spam on popular torrents to advertise your own. usually users that do this will spam the comments on many torrents, and these are very often removed.

I guess this could be a good use for the forums; as there's a Site Issues category, there could be a Torrent Issues category.

What good could it be: Complaining about the black bars / aspect ratio problems; Requesting missing episodes; Pointing out forks / edits; etc.

In lack of a better torrent ratings system.

It all goes back to listening to your parents about dealing with people.

If you don't want that treatment, don't apply it to others.

It's rude to do so IMO. In my day, I deleted all links in comments (except to subtitles). It wasn't all a question of people trying to redirect to their torrent, but there where useful links too. Some comments would provide screenshot links when description didn't have them. Others toward "how to" tutorials... But then there was the spam, download the latest blah blah on some fake site and infect your puter links. Forbidden content and so on. So, it became simple to just say "No links" and delete them all. For the most part, we all know what we're doing and know how to search for whatever we might need, without assistance. BUT, for thems who don't know what their doing... we killed the links to make the site safer for all (stupid or not). For the record, I'm with you. It's rude and such a rookie move. But that rookie may grow to a great encoder and gain his or her own skill in time and gain a following. We all want content, so try to encourage the rude prick into a great pirate.
That said, I speak for myself, and not as a Pirate Bay rep. I'm sure one will contribute soon.

Personally: I agree.

I do hope you are being sarcastic (but I'm afraid that I really don't think you are).

Officially: we don't delete such comments.

But if they (or any comments) are copypasta'd onto multiple torrents they might be considered spam.

Maybe a brief "Notice" on the add comments and upload torrent pages?

Clutter a page which is displayed to millions of people millions of times a day with a warning to the 1 or 2 people who don't realise that spamming is wrong?

Yeah, I was right about you.
