Video Editing Software

For creating and editing short videos (from short films to commercial type) - what are some good options for editing? 10 something years ago I was pretty good with iMovie, but that hasn't really translated well to my more recent needs. Especially given that the program has changed considerably since then. 
I couldn't really give specifics as to what I'm looking to make, and I imagine that recommendations would depend slightly on that. I suppose the best I could say is that I'd like something that has a soft learning curve or at least intuitive controls, at least at first.

All the above have their merits. But all the above have a steep learning curve. I started with open source stuff on a Linux system (One of my Dads brain farts). For a windows OS, i'd recommend Camtasia Studio. It's a screen capture software but has editing abilities. Intuitive and a very shallow learning curve.

Davici Resolve 14 Open Beta is good, and it's freeware.
The professional studio version is $300 and it is not cracked yet :(

You guys are fantastic - I guess I'll just buckle down and deal with the learning curves - but I'm going to check out Camtasia to see if it's something I can use because I do prefer the bunny hill to black diamonds

I would recommend Sony Vegas, it has all basic and advanced features you may need

Adobe software covers everything your looking for. Start to finish.
