Not sure if this is the best place for this post, but here it is.
I'm wanting to put my entire library, what I have on discs as well as what is on my computer, onto a collection of USB flash drives. Opinions on practicality and whatnot aside, what would be the best way to go about this for usability on a variety of devices, what format would be best, and what software(s) would you recommend for converting everything to the same format? I will primarily be using them with my PlayStation.
When I first envisioned the idea I was thinking I wanted it to work much like if I was using the actual DVD/bluray disc, just with a USB stick instead. Would that be something I can do, if so how would I go about that?

I did something for a family member a few weeks back. they had all these discs and when I looked into how much space the would need for a flash drive it would have been cheaper to just but a external drive.
I would go out and buy a external hard drive 1 or 2 TB should be more than enough

I think that this is the hard drive that I have connected to my Playstation 3. The Playstation has to figure out what's on the drive each time you open it between restarts. This can take quite a while if you have several thousand files on it, like I do. Also, it'll quit out to the main menu if you leave a video from the hard drive paused for a long time and try to resume it. Other than these two minor issues, it has been working perfectly for several years.
I usually re-encode everything to mp4s, for the best compatibility on all of my devices, but that's just me; I know others do things differently.

I also have an external USB drive for my storage needs as well.
Other than that, I still use optical media (i.e. discs).

I did say "opinions on practicality and whatnot aside". I was well aware that most people would suggest just getting an external hard drive, which I understand, but that is not what I want to do for a number of reasons. So, sorry for the bluntness, but please refrain from responding unless you are going to address what I actually asked for.

I was thinking of going with mp4 myself. What software do you use?

EDIT: You might also want to be a little more polite and throw away your bluntness when asking for help. I've got nothing against your wishes, and I'm sorry for not being able to help you with what you are looking for, but possessing etiquette tendencies will encourage people to go out of their ways to help you.
I'm not a mini-mod, I'm a friend.
