US surveillance of Merkel’s phone prompts angry German reaction

(from 'intelnews' Oct.24th 2013)

"News of an invasive intelligence-gathering operation by the United States, which allegedly targeted the official communications of German chancellor Angela Merkel, has prompted angry responses from the European Union.

The news prompted the French government to request that US surveillance of European heads of state be discussed during an upcoming EU summit, while The New York Times warned yesterday that “invasive American intelligence gathering” against Europe could “severely damage [...] decades of hard-won trans-Atlantic trust”.

The latest row between Washington and Brussels was sparked by a report aired on ARD, Germany’s state television station. It said that the National Security Agency (NSA), America’s foremost communications interception agency, had monitored the official cellular telephone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. A spokesperson for the German government told journalists yesterday that the German leader had “angrily” called US President Barack Obama and demanded assurances that her communications were “not the target of an American intelligence tap”. The German leader reportedly told Mr. Obama that there should be “no such surveillance of the communications of a head of government” belonging to a “friend and partner of the US”.

The Times reported that Washington’s responded by assuring Chancellor Merkel that her communications were “not the target of current surveillance and would not be in the future”. But the White House is said to have refused to enter into a discussion of past interception activities.

Mrs. Merkel’s telephone call was the second time in less than two days that Mr. Obama had to provide assurances of privacy to a European head of state. On Tuesday, the US President received a call from French President François Hollande, following reports that the NSA had spied on 70 million telephone calls in France between December 2012 and January 2013. Last month, Brazil’s President, Dilma Rousseff, cancelled an official state visit to the US after it emerged that the NSA had accessed her communications.

On Wednesday, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper issued a statement disputing the accuracy of reports that the NSA had targeted communications in France. But Brussels described US communications surveillance in Europe as “completely unacceptable” and called on US officials to explain the range and scope of American surveillance on European soil."

Despite the fuss over this, the only thing that will be done is various governments will order their spy services to find out how the NSA did it, so they can step up their own game. Anyway, we all know this is a mere distraction from their real business of spying on us.

I'm not sure why this is such big news. The US (and every other country) spies on every other country all the time, and always has, for thousands of years. The way it is done is just cooler now is all.

The US may not want to anger Germany though. Angry Germans have sort of a bad track record.

i'm firm in my beliefs that every politician should be spied on... especially foreign nationals (non us) and extra especially german chancellors... but what strikes me most with the newest leak that indicates that senator dianne feinstein (some of you might be familiar with how much i fucking hate this scum bag from the old forum) who once strongly supported us intelligence activities (mainly due to the fact that she had her nasty, sticky, old skeletor hands all over the intelligence community) is now upset because she is now aware that the nsa was was spying on politicians and other officials from 35 other countries (some of which were our allies).

basically, here is what i pick up from her reactions:

spying on people in general = good. who cares. poor people. bleh.

spying on politicians and elected officials = bad. totally unacceptable. rich people. zomgs!

maybe her reaction is based on that of a professional courtesy for the other thieving rats in hopes that they won't try to spy on her or maybe it's just because she can be held directly accountable for the actions of the nsa... but who knows. i've hated feinstein for decades and she's the main reason why i make it a point to vote against her every single time she's up for reelection.

one thing is for certain; when the president and the chair of the senate intelligence committee claim that they didn't know anything about what the nsa was doing, two things come to mind:

1) they are obviously lying rat bastards.

2) they would rather be known as incompetent fuck puppets than lying rat bastards.

seriously, for both of these people to have the audacity to claim that they have absolutely no control over the agencies that report to them what-so-ever... and then try to convince the public that we don't need to be able to defend ourselves anymore and that the government can be trusted and it's all good... i'm fucking disgusted.

That's exactly why I posted the story, the mainstream press were all over this like it actually mattered any.

Best description of Dianne Feindstain I've ever come across. Big Grin

When the chair of the SIC says they didn't know what was going on, expect more smoke. There's no way on earth, with her beady little eyeballs, that she didn't know the full extent of the NSA's overseas activities, and if Obama didn't know, then he's grossly incompetent.

I feel that the people of america need to wake up and realize how complacent they have become .During their complacentness they have been fooled and mocked, blatantly abused by there own false government.Although the "elected" officials are mostly to blame for the non official non elected behind the scense out of control mainiacs that are pulling the strings on the oboma puppet and every other puppet that has taken office after these mainiacs killed kennedy. The people are but lost !!! It will take many hard slaps in the face to awaken the groggy souls that have eyes full of sand , and ears stuffed full of cotton.
If the people of the "united states" don't snap, and wake up soon its going to be to late! Each brother citizen needs to waken his brother! It is your own fault if you don't wake another! We must take action as a whole! To put Back "FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE!!!!! Because now it is by the lie for the lie. Please people understand what I am saying here.We came so far. And now WE have lost sooo much it makes me sick to see the blind lies that bush feed this nation prooving that he is part of the cover up! he should be held accountable! as he lied to every person in amarica. If your not part of the solution! Then your part of the problem. Take action to unblind yourself and those around you. Not for your sake! But for our Children and there future. Educate one another on the real news! don't feed on the smoke and mirrors of the media. Please make a stand for our rights! We are to blame if we do nothing . If each of us don't take action then the poisoning of our water, selling of our water will continue. The false flagging of our involvement in forn affairs we are not told the real reasons for out troops being involved in any of the wars for the last 40 years.
The only country spreading terrorism is the u.s. If a country don't do as the maniac puppeterors want they construct lies to show that the country is of a terroristic nature. Or that they have wepons of mass destruction. But after we destroy each country we find no such thing. No proof of these Lies. It is our officials that are lieing to us as they are puppeted by the maniacs behind the sceans. Take action people before we can't !!!!!
The cocentration camps are here and the dust is being swept from them . Its not long before these places are filled with good people that should be free people. The puppet masters have a plan and it is to do away with us . They will stop many with death and imprison many more. I am not in fear of death! I am in fear of my children being inslaved in these prison camps.
Wake your brother, and take action !Hold all officials accountable and demand a change in our government. Demand that the puppet show stop. Thank you for reading this . your more than welcome to copy any of this and send it to any body . For those that need proof. start with loose change, and conspiracy theory, and just start doing some research, the reality will come to surface! If you don't see it then you really are one of them. 74

Calm down dear. The subject matter of this thread is NSA eavesdropping, feel free to start a luminarty thread of your own, or contribute to this one and stay on-topic.

BS and you know it. Facts backed up with sources are welcome, meaningless simplistic ones tend to be challenged here.

I'm sure if you organise some sort of protest and demand change, your government will quake in their boots and stop the puppet show. What about holding those accountable who aren't elected officials? Do you think the true puppet masters are actually in the public eye?

In years to come you may come to realise that most of this reptile conspiracy crap is manufactured to distract you, it's the oldest trick in the book and you've fallen for it. If you really think 'loose change' contains the truth, then you're in for a shock. Look further before getting all hysterical, I mean really look further, and develop your own original thoughts instead of repeating alex jones et al soundbites. One might argue that by putting stock in 'loose change' that you believe planes flew into the twin towers (an argument that isn't my own, I'd like to add) Did they? Were you there in new york on that day to witness the event/non-event with your own eyes, or are you just another repeater who fosters their theories based on what they have seen on tv?

Getting back on topic, stalwarts of truth, fox news, are reporting that the NSA has been spying on Merkel since 2002. See here, and Reuters report the NSA are no longer going to spy on economic targets like the IMF. Yawn.
