Neither is "more effective".

You don't actually need a port open at all.

But it will help, particularly when you're in small swarms, as if someone else doesn't have a port open neither of you will be able to connect to the other. That doesn't particularly matter in a larger swarm as you will find someone else to connect to.

If you're going to open a port, the particular port doesn't matter, there just has to be one...and the way in which it is opened doesn't matter, it just has to be opened.

If you use both at the same time, one will take priority. I don't know which, but it's irrelevant. All that matters is that a port is opened.
