H.264 is fine for DVD copies. Apple has mangled H.265 support for Apple TV and Windows wants $ to play it.
VLC does work fine. So depending on the media solution there are options.

I agree, old school xvid/avi will play on any hardware or software. The dvd's in my van & my buddys truck stereo
play them with no issues. Niether of us will get new hardware to "keep up with the Jones's" or because no one wants
to encode it anymore. I am lucky enough to have a minimal pc to convert to avi using a simple, low resource program.
My tv/movie library is pretty ridiculous and I don't think I'll be alive long enough to convert it to another format.
Xvid / Avi forever! in spite of file size
Having said that, what happened to all the xvid-afg tv releases? They seem to have suddenly stopped
being released around new years '25 for most of the shows I watch. Is this temporary or permanent?
I havn't been able to find any info in the forums anywhere, thx in advance if anyone has info.
