Happy impending Turkey Day to all, and in the spirit of the season I present you with apes! Make sure to watch this on Turkey Day itself, normally Johnny doesnt care but in this instance he really does insist.
This is an interesting one that is very similar to my work done on Humanoid Woman, except a bit more seek time to get the right footage. The video sourced here was taken from the original Saru No Gundan series Japanese DVD release and edited down to match with the Sandy Frank movie, timed and synced to the best audio source I could find (Time of the Apes USA DVD) and English credits completely re-done from scratch. Not only does the original Japanese show DVD have much better image quality, it was progressive 29.97fps with duplicate frames, so I was able to move it down to 23.976 with no pesky interlacing! Seems the original show was shot on film (as evidenced by all the taped-together film you can see during cuts on the DVD lol), so maybe one day we will see a blu but probably not so I decided to jump on this now. Footage is taken from episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, 21, 24, 25, and 26. So yeah Sandy's crew really took a chainsaw to this one!
As mentioned, video quality is much improved since there are no VHS-based imperfections and the grain is still present along with a much more natural color grade. Unfortunately they decided to cram all 26 episodes (and a crappy copy of the Sandy Frank movie) on 4 single-layer DVDs, so the source bitrates are quite low and the grain can get messy in some areas. All in all though, still a major upgrade. See below:
Anyway, if a full re-edit of the movie and re-making credits by hand wasnt enough, I synced up both the S03E06 episode as well as the KTMA episode, along with unriffed feature audio, to make this the definitive source for apes. And the cherry on top, I also created a hybrid of the two that uses all of S03's material and filled in some of the gaps with KTMA audio (similar to what i did on the Gamera releases). There were two long stretches of the movie that they cut out of S03E06 that they did riff before so pretty much the entire movie is riffed now, this is the default audio track.
And as another special bonus, if you have further interest in apes you can check out the original TV series in its entirety with english subtitles here which seems to be the only source of this show with english subtitles. You may or may not be able to learn the true fate of Godo, if you are into that kind of thing. The show goes way more in depth on the ape society, so its definitely cool to check out and doesnt skimp on the goofy.
With all that said, ENJOY!
