Those glossy laptop screens, do you like?

The last time I bought a laptop matte screen displays were the thing, I don't think glossy was even an option. Whatever the manufacturer calls it, Truebrite, Truelife, etc. I really do not like that mirror like reflective display.

In my browsing for a new laptop, so far the only one I found that is expressly a matte display screen is Alienware, much more computer than I actually need. My only firm requirements right now is I want a new desktop replacement with at least a 17 inch screen.

As I have no experience actually using a glossy screen day to day I was hoping to hear what others think of their shiny screen.

Glossy screens are great in controlled environments. I occasionally use mine as a portable laptop, but for all intents and purposes, it's really a portable PC. I rarely set it up outside homes/hotels/other people's houses. If the glare gets too bad for me, I'll just resort to buying a matte cover for it.

Some before and after pictures in there. Matte screens are a must have for portability, for the same reasons that phones can become garbage in the sunlight. You will lose a small bit of clarity with matte screens, so I opted to go for the glossy. Fallout 3 looks so amazing with my 1080p 16:9 screen, that I will sometimes move my head physically closer to my screen to see things in the distance. Movies are equally clear. Internet browsing in a cafe is not as bad as you might think, but that is due to the brightness of the screen itself.

I guess to conclude, the brighter the screen, and the more you are in a controlled environment MOST of the time, the less matte is needed.

Thanks for your input spydyrman. As I am looking for not only a desktop replacement but also a television replacement, for primary use in controlled environs, you make a glossy screen sound quite appealing. Technically, I wonder if true hi-definition video is even possible on a matte screen.

Applying the after market matte film to the display is a good compromise / back up plan, thanks for the manufacturers link.
