A couple classics.

'The Lottery' by Shirley Jackson

And one of my favourites. 'To Build a Fire' by Jack London.

Possibly my favorite short story may be, 'Pop Art' by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son.

My two favourite H G Wells shorts are :

Under the Knife

and

The Country of the Blind

Many of the stories in the book The Country of the Blind and Other Stories are good, intriguing and great fun to read. One can profitably delight from sampling stories like The Moth, Davidson's Eyes, Crystal Egg, etc.

Two of the greatest short story writers ever are; Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft. I can't really link stories by them, because there are so many. But check them out and then be prepared to sleep under your covers.
