What operating system are you using?

If you are on linux or macOS just go with transmission unless you want fancy bells and whistles

If you are on windows go with either of the open source clients available (Transmission(?), Deluge, Qbittorrent, others?)

Stay away from utorrent - it was good 10 years ago. It is certified malware today. I am not sure if vuze/azureus is still alive?

For movie playback get mpv

For stream ripping get youtube-dl (rips a ton of sites, including all your favorite porntubes)

For generic downloads (cyberlockers like mega etc, youtube as well) get jdownloader

For usenet leeching get sabnzbd+

For ripping dvds and blurays get handbrake and/or MakeMKV

For ebooks, if you are on windows, get the Library Genesis app. Also get any IRC client that supports file downloads (Xchat is open source) and connect to #bookz on undernet. Also get Calibre to manage your library

For all your audio/video conversion needs, get FFMPEG

For browser security get addblock+ - and noscript if you are paranoid

For the extra paranoid: do all your pirate browsing, downloading and executing in a sandbox or a virtual machine. Also learn how to use TOR

Honrable mention: eMule(/aMule) for that retro kazaa/napster experience

That is infact incorrect, the malware so to speak is a simple fix that can be corrected by people that know what they're doing.  A simple fix and the uTorrent client can be sorted out and it works like a charm.  I have used it now for many many years and I find it to be a really good client and I've used it previously for many years without any problems.

I will never understand this backwards mentality of yours. Rather spend time "fixing" intentionally bad software than just picking any free open source alternative that doesn't force ads and similar shit on you. But since you are so nifty with utorrent, why don't you share your solutions with the pirate world for the benefit of everybody?

No need to share anything the resolution is common knowledge.  All the threads are located on the uTorrent official support forum where many people have all discussed this problem over the years.  This problem has been around for years and is nothing new.  Like most things if you take your time to go there and read the threads on there then you would know what you are doing.  uTorrent is actually a great client so no need for anything else.  The typical set up that I usually do is just a part of setting up a client in general, nothing fancy involved in the slightest.

UTorrent 2.2 was decent, but 3+ versions gave me problems with corrupted files.
Azureus/Vuze is an awesome program - but its Java, and slow and cumbersome. And prone to crashes, especially in Linux.

I use qbittorrent on both Win and Linux. See if you can get a slightly older version than current. Latest Win version gives Python error, and needs to be restarted to find DHT nodes. (Probably peculiar to my system with an atypical Python install). However it doesnt corrupt files (but may dump some unfinished files in 'done' dir - just tell it affix default suffix (!qBT) to unfinished files. ). But its main strength is its ability to bind to TUN/TAP ports which will shut off your net connection if your VPN drops connection.

In Linux, if binding is not needed, ktorrent is much is a much more modern alternative to Transmission.

Transmission for me.

I just torrent on Windows though, but I first met Transmission on GNU/Linux.

Either way, it works for both and for Mac.
