TV Video Files Won't Run
#1
I'm using the WD TV Live media player to watch downloaded MP4 and MKVĀ television shows on my LG 42 inch TV. A few months ago, some shows I downloaded would not run on the media player. This has progressively gotten worse and is now at the point where about 1/3 to 1/2 of the shows I download each day will not run. Has there been a change in recent file specs so that my WD TV Live can no longer process the files? Alternatively, what's the best way to stream the files to my TV from the external hard drive I save them to?

This is not a single central monopoly. Everyone uploads whatever they want. There is no one spec. Therefore specs vary on a day by day and uploader by uploader. Obviously they evolve over time and eventually hardware falls short.

Download and install mediainfo and use it to obtain the specs of the movies which don't play. If you can't spot the pattern, post some of specs here.

[Off the top of my head, I guess you've probably started downloading HEVC or x265 content which your hardware may not be able to play or may need an update to play.]

I agree. That's probably the reason, but more info is needed. btw, I hate x265 crap. Totally unnecessary and only makes lots of people not be able to play lots of things. I understand that 'advances' need to be made, but at least make the 'advances' usable by most people, otherwise it's not much of an advance. But in your case it may be something totally different. If not the HEVC / x265 scenario...

There are some RGs who's encodes keep pausing and skipping on me,
when I play on my HD tuners media player. Notably FLEET and some other one I can't think of right now.

I don't know why, but remuxing the file fixes it for me.
my mp4box or mkvmerge

I guess whatever muxer they use, that media player of mine no likey.
The video & audio in them are good though... Try remuxing it.

Look into Plex Media Server
