Syncing out of sync subtitles Inspector Lynley series
#1
Hi,

I know how to download external subtitles and add them to a convert video to DVD program such as ConvertXtoDVD, but I do not know how to correct things when the subtitles are out of sync. Yes, I know there are programs such as SubEdit, but they're too complicated for me.

Specifically, in the case of the Inspector Lynlely mystery series, all the subtitles out there that I can find INCLUDE the Diana Rigg intro, but the only video download for the entire series OMITS THE INTRO. Thus, the subtitles are wildly out of sync, and seemingly, beyond possibility of correction.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? As a secondary question, how does one leave comments specifically for the person who has uploaded the torrent file?

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Try to use a player where you can offset the subs at least to some extent, like Media Player Classic (Google CCCP).

Edit as I didn't notice you got the subtitles as separate files, not in premuxed files, sorry.

Or, perhaps too complex:
Download Aegisub, open the subtitle file, and then from within Aegisub open the video and audio, finally shift the subtitles as a block. Watch and be happy Smile

Additional steps to extract subs from MKV files and remuxing.
Download and install MKVToolNix and the MKVMerge and MKVExtract GUIs; demux the subtitle track with the MVKExtract.
Do shift.
Mux the updated subs with the original file using MKVMerge.

Subtitle edit is pretty much all you'll need, ever.

Drop in the subtitle file, press Synchronization > Visual sync > Open Video file :
Show Content

Line up the start time of the first and last lines then press sync:
Show Content

If the subs just need shifting 2, 3 or 23 seconds in one direction or the other, Synchronization > Adjust All imes

It's not difficult.
It's an awesome tool.

Thank you both for your help.

gcjm: I followed the steps you suggested for Subedit, but I ran into a problem. After I enter the opening and closing lines and press SYNC, I get an error message: "first scene must come before last scene". No matter what lines I enter, I still get that message, and can't get beyond it.

Any suggestions?

Phlebas: I think I've managed to line things up with Aegisub. However, I'm not clear. Is the video supposed to PLAY THROUGH Aegisub? If so, I haven't found how to do that yet.

Both of you: I don't think I made clear that I not only want to line up the subtitles to play on computer video player such as VLC, but also I want to transfer the downloaded video and the downloaded external subtitles to a dvd through ConvertXtoDVD so I can play them on my big screen. Will the subedit programs you mention line up the subtitles properly for that?

Again, many thanks to both of you for your help and for any further suggestions you can give me.

Additional note fro gcjm:

After closing and restarting the Subedit program several times, I no longer get the error message referred to below. But I am at a loss as to how to start the subtitles with the first line of the dialogue as opposed to the intro. Even "setting" the first line of the dialogue doesn't work since the intro continues to play through it. Also, setting the first line of the intro doesn't work since the intro is not included in the downloaded video.

Don't get me wrong. I really appreciate the uploaded videos. But IT WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER IF THE UPLOADERS INCLUDED SUBTITLES FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED.

You can play in Aegisub, but that's not the idea. Save the modified subtitle file and use it instead of the original one for playing or when converting to play on a standalone player.

My advice, and with respect to all who've posted above. Would be to try and wait for bob5695 to come online and see the thread. I've watched and asked his help in the past on audio/video questions and the guy blows me away still with his knowledge.

Again. I mean no disrespect to any who have posted on the thread. I'm only talking from experience Smile

Thanks. I can do that, but I still don't know how to synchronize the picture with the subtitles EXACTLY. That is what I find so difficult.

Thanks. I hope he comes on, for I would be interested in hearing his advice.

Thanks. I got this to work to a point. But I still don't know how to line up the PICTURE FRAME WHERE THE DIALOGUE STARTS with the SUBTITLE DIALOGUE. That is what I find so difficult.

Make a copy of your subtitle file so you can start over again if needed.
Open the subtitle file in Aegisub.
Select the menu Video and select your video file. Load.
Select the menu Audio. Select Open Audio from Video.
Click the first line you want to sync. Write down the time stamp in some way.
Klick the play line button. Then try to find out where you are in relation to where you really want to be by using play in various ways. This is exploratory and I can't help you with the details.
Change the time stamp for the line until you're happy with the positioning. Calculate the shift needed.
Undo the changes, or close and reopen everything. Select all lines, or the ones you want to shift, and from the Timing menu select to shift them the amount you need.
If necessary, save and repeat to shift other blocks of lines with the same procedure.
Save and combine with your video/audio file with your favorite player/converter.

Edit: If you can't make things line up because the timing error varies, you either give up or learn to time for real. You can find useful guides on the internet, for example http://doki.co/support/doki-timing-guide/. Do not take all advice there as absolute truth, as timers tend to have different styles Tongue

Thank you for the additional instructions, but it's no use. I just can't do it. I can do the first part, but when it comes to delicate timing adjustments, it's beyond me. I really need a "Timing for Dummies" manual. Ironically, that seems to be what you refer me to at the end of your instructions, but that merely compounds the problem. Basically, I can only function with all the technology contained in one click. But thank you for all the trouble you've taken to help me. I greatly appreciate it.
