Sweden drops Assange rape investigation after nearly 10 years

A Swedish prosecutor said on Tuesday she would not proceed with an investigation into an allegation of rape against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after a review of the evidence.

Deputy Chief Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson said:

Quote:“After conducting a comprehensive assessment of what has emerged during the course of the preliminary investigation I then make the assessment that the evidence is not strong enough to form the basis for filing an indictment.”

The 48 year-old Australian citizen has repeatedly denied the allegation against him, made in 2010.

Assange is being held in Belmarsh prison, "Britain's Guantanamo Bay", pending a hearing in February on extradition to the United States, which wants the 48 year-old Australian citizen over 18 criminal counts including allegedly conspiring to hack government computers and violating an espionage law. Assange could face a prison sentence up to 175 years.

Assange's father John Shipton said that the Noble Prize nominee is facing mental and physical harassment, despite calls of his release from the United Nations, citing "psychological torture". After meeting Assange in August, his father said that the whistleblower was a bit shaky, is suffering from anxiety and has lost a lot of weight. "It is very distressing, and the intensity of his treatment has increased over the past year. He is being subjected to every sort of torment," Shipton stated.

According to WikiLeaks, the award-winning journalist is put under solitary confinement within healthcare, wherein he spends 21 to 23 hours of the day in his cell and with "controlled moves." As per reports, every time Assange is moved from his cell, the corridors are cleared and the prison goes under lockdown during the time of his movement.

Shipton revealed that laser microphones and video cameras were installed even in the toilet to monitor conversations, an international report said. "We could not say anything without it being recorded, Shipton said.

The best part is: The guy didn't spy for his gain or some other party's; he just made public information on what the authorities (public servants) were doing, specially under the table, which all citizens must know in a democracy.

I believe if we had a Democratic administration instead of Republican, that Julian Assange would be in jail here just for the hacked DNC files distributed by his Wikileaks.

The charges were supposed to have been dropped a while back.

He remains in jail for not showing up to court, for charges that are now dismissed.

And we thought that Stalin had kangaroo courts......
