Summer of '87: Frachise Killer Cage Match (slightly OT)

Semi-interesting fact:  "Jaws: The Revenge" and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" were released with a week of one another.  Neither my wife or I have seen them.  Gonna have a double feature evening this weekend and endure both to try to determine which is empirically worse, whether either is "good" bad, and see if either would be good riff fodder.

If you haven't seen these, join us and give your two cents.  If you have seen both, any thoughts?

i've never seen the supes one - stopped watching back then when richard pryor (who was great of course as a comedian/actor!) joined the cast on III. just looked dumb as hell to my 10 year old sensibilities. and never got back on board with the c. reeves franchise. i DID however see Jaws: Revenge in the theater and remember it well. seen a few times on cable and actually quite enjoy it only bc michael caine is so slumming it but does class it up enough to be cheesy fun. definitely not a good movie but i'm not sure it's the in the so bad it's good camp either. i'd say it's mostly nostalgia for me but i give it a solid 5.5/10 just for fluff.

Superman IV is very cheap, shoddy, and unfinished. (Watch Electric Boogaloo: The Wild Untold Story Of Cannon Films for more info on that.) It's cheap cash-grab crap that was never going to be any good, especially as the money ran out and the script was hacked apart to finish the movie.

Jaws: The Revenge is a different sort of cash-grab. It's inscrutable, boring, and pointless. The script was thrown together at the last minute and it feels like it. The ending was bad and laughable enough that they were embarrassed into changing it for European release and home video. It makes Jaws 3-D seem like high art by comparison, just by virtue of the fact that things actually happened in that movie. It made 90 minutes feel like 3 hours and I still didn't end up feeling like I saw a plot in the end. The cheap shittyness of the movie isn't as memorable as with Superman IV, but it was definitely also incredibly cheap and probably ends up being less fun to watch overall, with its lack of kitsch. I'd probably get it out of the way first and chase it down with Superman.

So, are you watching these riffed or unriffed? I only know of a riff of of Superman IV by the Disciples of Golan.  If Jaws IV has a riff, IDK about it.

Badfilms covers the truth about these flicks pretty completely, and to reinforce his suggested viewing, any fan of cinema and solid B-grade schlock would benefit from seeking out the documentary he recommended above.

Christopher Reeve's Supes and the return of Lex Luthor are the highlights of Superman.  Fun Fact: John Cryer (here playing Luthor's nephew) would decades later go on to play Lex Luthor opposite Melissa Benoise in Supergirl.

I suppose Michael Caine is the highlight of Jaws, I mean the man is a cinematic treasure. That said, it was a truly forgettable film. With Supes, I at least remember Nuclear Man? <shrug>

"I have never seen [Jaws: The Revenge], but by all accounts it was terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."

Unriffed.

FWIW, we tackled J:TR last night.  Pretty bad, mostly boring, but I think that it could be great riff fodder.  "The Last Shark" was arguably a better movie and a decent RiffTrax.

Fear not, good doctor! I can help with half of the request!
Here is a working link to Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. I would imagine it will live there for a few days, at least.

I rewatched this at a painfully late hour last night, and well, it is what it is.  It would have been soooo much better to have used a known villain than create effing Nuclear Man.  There's a few things I really enjoyed about the film, like Supes getting actually sick from his Nuke Man injuries.  The rest, not so much. Lois Lane, for example, was a hot mess.  They had no idea what to do with Margot kidder and changed their minds at least three times in the script. Still, it wasn't completely boring.

As stated above, I do not know of any riff of that particular Jaws movie, but the film itself is readily available. And it is now in my queue, god bless.
