George Lucas's "Star Wars" and J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" series (will be referred to "Middle Earth" series for simplicity) are released in a rather strange chronological method in which the story starts in the middle, then jumps back and finishes up until where it started filming.
To follow along and make sense of the whole story, how do you watch it?

Watch them in order of how they happen. Also not forgetting how complicated the story of X-Men is and all those films. The difficult thing is how they are released and people watch them when they come out at the cinema but then again there's all kinds of jumps back and forth between different times. Confusing enough, I watched Star Wars as a kid when it came out on VHS and I will always remember the very first movie and at the time it was the only Star Wars movie there was. Right from the start it was simply just one movie a standalone and nothing more. Until massive revenue came in and got them stirred up to make more movies and the rest is history.
