Star Trek: Discovery vs. The Orville
#1
I've been watching both shows, that debuted at almost the same time, not coincidentally I'm sure.

So far I think Discovery is average to below average, while The Orville is just the opposite, average to above average.

Of course Discovery is the 'real' Star Trek, and Orville is the 'fake' one, but the fake is better than the real so far I think.

How about you folks? What do you think?

I would have to agree with you as their is so much uncreativity by reviving something that should stay as it is just like Star Wars, at least the fake takes a different plot line sorta.

Note: Please do not take this the wrong way as I mean not to harm or offend anyone.

I agree as well. While both are entertaining, Trek isn't really breaking any new ground. Maybe it's for fear of offending their base. The Orville for me is just fun, and I'm glad it was renewed.

Greetings...

I like The Orville - It's not Star Trek, but it's a fair entertainment.
The new STD isn't Star Trek either, and it's just plain bad. At least for now. Even Next Gen's first few seasons
were pretty hokey. Killing off Tasha Yar was a definite improvement!

You can top it off with - it's not on TV! only online.

I think we may be seeing a glimpse of the future - the death of broadcast tv. Or at least the first dying gasps...

I've never even heard of The Orville until seeing this topic thread, so thanks for bringing it to my attention !

So just commenting here briefly before I see the first episode. Not being a cartoon watcher, the thing I expected was to watch anything that Seth MacFarlane was involved in.....yet he's the Captain in this live action sci-fi show that, from what I read about it this morning, is something of a parody of Star Trek.

There are some big-name guests including Charlize Theron! One of the cast members -- the doctor provides the ST connection : Penny Johnson, who was Kasidy Yates on the finest of the Trek series Star Trek : Deep Space Nine. ( I also liked her as Beverly on The Larry Sanders Show. )

So I'm downloading the entire 12 episode first season at the moment.

As for Star Trek : Discovery goes, compared to any of the older series it's a piece of shit! None of the characters are particularly likable or memorable. Unfortunately it may actually be remembered for one of the actors on that show being allegedly molested as a child 30 years earlier by Kevin Spacey.

I like the original Star Trek but I've not watched Discovery. [Or any of the other series in the franchise. I'm not big on "extended universes"--they're another symptom of lack of imagination, and greed, on the part of entertainment companies. Simple re-packaging of existing ideas to squeeze a few (or a lot) more bucks out of them without having to think of anything new.]

But I did watch The Orville. Mostly, I will admit, for the perverse pleasure of seeing how bad Seth MacFarlane would be. To my surprise it was actually much better than I expected.

I do think they got the humor balance slightly wrong--there wasn't enough silliness in it for it to be taken as a parody, which meant that when they threw the "funny bits" in they seemed distinctly out of place for what is more of a straight show.

I can't say I'm particularly looking forward to the second season but I will probably watch at least the first few episodes to see if they're learnt anything from season 1.

Funniest part is Norm MacDonald as the blob like alien.

I would agree with that, but I can't since I know that Star Trek TNG exists. I'm sure if you watched it you would appreciate how they keep the essence of the original space exploration theme, with upgrades in not only special effects, but story lines in general. The ONLY thing that the original series beats TNG in is the movies.... TNG movies are lame, while the original movies are some of the most epic ever made (Wrath of Khan is still by fr my favorite movie from the franchise)

the Clips from YouTube I've seen of Orville looks decent for what I use it for (mindless escape from reality). I haven't seen Discovery yet so I'm not qualified to make a comparison.

To be fair I did watch some TNG, and it was also good. But I only ever watched episodes here and there, rather than following it as a series. Now? I would go back and give that one another shot if it weren't 176 episodes long. Which is another symptom of the flog-it-to-death mentality I can't be bothered giving my life over to. If you cannot tell a story in significantly less than 100 episodes you don't know what story it is you are trying to tell, you're just ever more desperately trying to spin things out.

There used to be a brilliant website called jump-the-shark that collected consensus opinions on when shows passed their best before dates; but it was bought by some media company I can't remember which and then closed down.

[The Orville is "good enough" (and short enough at this point) that if you're into the genre I would recommend giving it a try. I don't think you're going to be blown away, but I don't think you will be hugely disappointed by it either. The first three episodes are a fair representation of the quality and tone of the rest of the season, and there is no story arc to worry about, so that's all you have to watch to figure out whether you want to watch the rest.]

The Orville has potential, but the reliance on the quippy puns does both date and diminish the show. The characters have potential to be interesting and the appearance of guest stars from genre shows is always welcome.
