The Spanish newspaper “El Pais” quoted sources in the National Police as saying that the Covid19 prompted unprecedented reverse migratory movements, as Algerians and Moroccans fled the Iberian Peninsula aboard illegal boats after paying up to 5.000 euros, especially in light of the economic slowdown and unemployment, and the suspension of commercial activities.
The Spanish newspaper reported on Thursday that the national police monitored the activity of boats of illegal immigrants who returned from the Spanish coast towards western Algeria, and from Sardinia towards the northeast of Algeria, adding that the immigrants paid money amounting to 5000 euros per person to leave in the opposite direction, meaning from Spain to Algeria and Morocco.
According to the same source, this reverse activity of immigrants’ boats from Spain towards North Africa (Algeria and Morocco) is caused by the widespread of the Covid19 in the country, and the suspension of air and sea flights, in addition to the loss of jobs due to the economic stoppage that affected several sectors.
The Spanish newspaper did not provide figures on the number of Algerian illegal immigrants who left Spain by boat, but said that 100 Moroccans arrived on the coast of their country on small boats, to escape the Covid19 and the consequences of the economic closure and quarantine.
Although the Spanish newspaper claimed that its information was reported by sources in the National Police, it later cited in articles that were published in Algerian and Moroccan media that talk about the reverse migration of illegal boats, noting, for example, that 12 illegal immigrants were intercepted northwest of Oran (western Algeria) and several other illegal immigrants were arrested off the eastern coast of Algeria, and they were quarantined for 14 days by the authorities of their country.
