Spain: First conviction for 'fake news' social media post

Published: November 9, 2022

A Guardia Civil officer from Barcelona has become the first person to be convicted of publishing fake news.

Judges handed down a sentence of 15 months to the man, after he falsely posted a video on social media claiming to be migrants attacking members of the public. In reality the video came from China and featured a migrant child being assaulted.

During sentencing, it was agreed to suspend the sentence, after the defendant pleaded guilty to publising inflamatory stories on social media.

He was fined over €1,600 and agreed to close his social media accounts, as well as being prohibited against working with children for the next five years.

Who knows whether the video was authentic or not. Since the video has been expunged, we can't make any determination on its veracity.

How did the Spanish "authorities" determine the video was from China?
