I don't understand why some torrents on Pirate Bay always indicate zero seeders and leechers. So what I've done is to delete and re-add the torrent by slightly changing its contents (for instance by adding a text file with a small comment). Then magically the new torrent has the seeders and leechers shown!

That is a terrible idea. Now you have two swarms for the same content, which will ultimately kill the torrents faster than if you had just left them alone.

I'd like to add for those doing this one.

Only apply this  to torrents that are not mirror-ed to other sites.

Also extend a few hours seeding the deleted torrent to cater the last hits before deletion.

I have never had a problem replacing a torrent that erroneously shows no seeders perpetually. If the original torrent has been copied on other torrent sites, those copies die out pretty fast. And the new one I create on Pirate Bay becomes popular if I seed it long enough. I don't understand why Pirate Bay cannot locate seeders when there are many of them, for instance on my current torrent "Dragons Den CA - Season 1-11". For sure there are several seeders because when I try to resume seeding it myself, I end up uploading nothing even though there are multiple leechers! I am probably going to have to replace it soon because it is always shown at the bottom of the page of results when one searches for "Dragons Den CA Season". Actually, this is getting frustrating for me because replacing a torrent wastes a lot of my time for nothing!

Just because you have never noticed a problem does not mean there has never been a problem. Particularly when it (reduced availability to other people of content which you have available to you) is the sort of problem you would be hard pressed to spot even if you were looking for it.

But common sense should tell you that when everyone is sharing the same thing it works more effectively and more efficiently when they are using the same identifier to refer to it.

Q.E.D. You kill the torrent which you, and others, have spent bandwidth uploading, and you have to do it all over again to get a new torrent established.

It can. The admin simply does not consider it important therefore he doesn't bother.

Like you, I disagree. Most-if-not-all staff do too but the facts are:
a) it has been the way it has been for several years but
b) the sky hasn't fallen and
c) there is no reason to expect it is going to change any time soon.

Exactly--replacing a torrent wastes a lot of your time for nothing. So don't do it. Not doing it will avoid your frustration AND be better for the torrent.
