RiffTrax's "The Phantom Menace": Angriest. Riff. EVER?
#1
I'm kinda/sorta shocked. I'm no fan of any of the Star War's prequels, doubtless; but as I just finished my 6th overall viewing of RiffTrax "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" & I did not remember it being so sarcastic & downright belligerent, for the entire film. It's just not fun. At. All. (For me, anyway.) It just feels boring after a while, no laughs, no smiles, & I kept feeling like they were mailing-it-in, & wallowing in self-indulgence.

My question: What are your views of this riff? And: Do you recall any other riffs where the sheer relentless negativity left you bored & unentertained?

It's one of the riffs I watch when I'm in the mood for cantankerousness. It's also a movie with many silly, boring parts - which they commonly use anger or impatience towards to combat. I haven't seen it in a spell but the Paranormal Activity riff often gets borderline mean, as does the first The Room riff (especially towards the actress portraying Lisa and her appearance).

I feel like you should start with New Hope. If you watch all the original trilogy riffs by the time you get to Phantom Menace it feels like they are so done with Star Wars it translates to all that anger you're seeing there. Basically, their hatred is a joke itself. Also, Phantom Menace is a pretty terrible movie. I get the anger lol

I had no problem with it.  The entire "saga" was so cliche-ridden and hokey that it would be difficult not to be so relentless towards its weakest installment.

I can't think of one where the Riffers made me lose interest ~ in fact, the riffing saved several otherwise unwatchable films.  There were a few where the movie itself was so bad that not even the riffing couldn't make me stick around:  Paranormal Activity, for example.   I still haven't seen that one all the way through.

I usually don't have a problem if the riffing gets mean.  I can still remember going to theaters and hearing people boo for something stupid or ridiculous.  Mean riffs are no different.

big up to all of it except u should have another go at Paranormal, i love all the jabs about how nothing actually happens throughout the entire thing. how could anyone possibly be mean enough to phantom menace, with its worst character in all of movie history, its especially-terrible child actor playing the lead, the immaculate conception, etc etc, all adding up to turning three of the world's most beloved movies into the beginning of one of the world's worst franchises. the film is a true travesty, and gave permission for future travesties; were they supposed to be nice? the only thing i have against the phantom menace riff is that bill's not there.

I was just about to hold my nose and dive back in to the prequel trilogy, which I haven't watched since they came out. Of course it can only be done with RiffTrax holding my hand. I was curious to see if it was truly worse than the latest trilogy. Photo finish? I'll report back with findings.

Paranormal Activity is one of my favorite major studio riffs. It's a perfect response to how I felt watching the move a number of years ago.

Rifftrax was too nice to Phantom Menace. That was one of the very early riffs, before they got more jaded.

But the mockery of the racist Asian caricature aliens always makes me laugh.

Lol @ downright belligerent.
Where they rude to your bad movie?
Smile

If its any consolation,
anything anybody could say,
would still be too nice for anything by jj abrams.

So put it all on a galactic scale.

I have problems getting through Paranormal Activity. They just seem like they hate doing it, and it makes it less fun for me.
As far as the Phantom Menace, its been a while since I've seen it, and it's true, I hate Jake Lloyd's performance as Anakin, but I feel really bad about making fun of it. It wasn't the kids fault. George Lucas cant direct people, and obviously he is worse with kids. If you watch the extras on TPM disc you can see the finalists for the role and George DID NOT pick the one that was WAY better. Jake Lloyd is a messed up kid now. I guess he was taunted mercilessly by his peers after that movie came out. It wasn't Jake Lloyd's decision to yell "Yippee!", that is ALL Lucas' fault.
