Recommend a tv comedy series.

Recommend to others, a good tv comedy series, not necessarily one of your favourites but one worth suggesting. Tell us why you recommend it and please include a link or two - IMDb/RT/wiki, TPB etc. One recommendation per post.

I'll kick off with Psychoville (2009 - 2011), a disturbing, deliciously dark British comedy, featuring Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, and which nicely filled the hole left behind when The League of Gentlemen ended in 2002. There were 2 addictive series, each with 7 episodes.

Most of the humour is quite creepy and subtle, and the show's darkest and most likeable characters are David Sowerbutts and his mother, Maureen, with whom he has an unnaturally close relationship.

david's lamp....

Other characters include a one-handed clown who can't stand children, a certifiable midwife who keeps a doll as a real-life child, and a blind toy collector. This is twisted comedy at its best.

If you liked that (which I did), you will probably like this:

Inside No. 9

A new dark comedy series from Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton (of multi-award-winning Psychoville). Each episode is standalone, featuring separate characters and situations, all linked by their events happening behind very different doors marked 'number 9'. The stories are all darkly humourous with unexpected twists. All of the action in each story is limited to a single location in an attempt to bring about a feeling of claustrophobia and intensity

From a grand country house where a game of 'sardines' leads to some chilling revelations in a wardrobe; to a very oddly haunted house; to a blood-soaked actor's dressing room in London's West End; to the flat of an apparently happy primary school teacher who becomes the victim of a good deed; these unpredictable tales feature high comedy and claustrophobic horror by turns.

Honestly: I've not watched it myself yet but it's by the same guys, in the same vein, and similarly highly rated. It's worth a crack.

A Very Peculiar Practice (1986–1988)

A black comedy with surreal elements. It concerned an idealistic young doctor, Stephen Daker (Peter Davison), taking up a post as a member of a university medical centre. The centre is staffed by a group of misfits including the bisexual Rose Marie (Barbara Flynn), self-absorbed Bob Buzzard (David Troughton), and decrepit Scot, Jock McCannon (Graham Crowden) who heads the team. One of the themes of the series is the increasing commercialisation of higher education.

I could only find a trailer for Season 2:

I loved this when it first came out, and watched it again a few years ago--although made in the 80's the themes it explores are still relevant. It's worth a crack.

PS. Bonus points here if you're a Doctor Who fan--Davison was the 5th Doctor, Crowden was offered but turned the role of the 4th Doctor and Troughton, who has played half-a-dozen roles in Doctor Who over the years, was the son of the 2nd Doctor.

Monty Python's Flying Circus

Just lovely! Nothing makes sense, but on the same token, the humour is very witty; you need a good sense to laugh, yet it's all nonsense. There are other comedy shows that I want to recommend, but said one recommendation per post, so that's my one recommendation.

Hope this helps.

Yes Minister

"Quite easily among the best-written comedies of all time. The razor-sharp wit and the superbly crafted word-play will have you both laughing out loud and oooohing and aaaahing in appreciation. Yes Minister tracks the day jobs of its three pivotal characters: Jim Hacker, the honorable Minister of the Dept of Administrative Affairs, his Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Private Sct, Bernard.

In each episode, the somewhat idealistic (though exceedingly publicity-hungry) Minister tries to reform govt in one way or the other, but is blocked by his Permanent Sct, Sir Humphrey. Though this comedy is based on the British system of govt, I think the problems presented have universal appeal and so it would be appreciated by Americans, in fact by people of all nationalities.

The highlight of the comedy, in my mind, is the brilliant script, esp the lines Sir Humphrey delivers when he wishes to "talk a lot but say nothing". Nigel Hawthorne's acting is Grade A material and a treat to watch."

Personally, I think this should be compulsory viewing for pretty much everyone. The clip below for example, will in just two minutes teach you why you should never ever pay even the slightest bit of attention to a poll.

Frasier

Lasting 11 seasons between 1993 - 2004, this spin-off (from Cheers) has always been one of my favourite tv comedies. I never liked Cheers, and only started watching this when season 4 was being aired. The humour is top-notch, with the quipy insults between Frasier, and his brother Niles, being comedy gold. I'm currently enjoying season 7, again. Big Grin

Seinfeld has strange friends, people that can't be labelled as interesting, or cool; so why this profound frienship? Because he sees beyond that, because he's better than us.

A 90's classic, in the naif-utopian style, nearly a guilty pleasure.
