Other Public Torrent sites

Can someone explain to me why a file sharing site would make it difficult to upload? It's not as though the site is conveying a favor on the uploader. The contrary is true. And it's not as though you can't still end up with uploaders who, despite registering, are assholes who will stick viruses all-sorts in their files. I'm afraid I don't understand the rationale behind setting up a series of hoops before a person acquires upload status. Download--yes. Upload--no.

Why? Economics.
  • uploading fake or infected torrents is easy, and the people who do it live in 3rd world countries. They're paid. Peanuts to be sure, but that's a significant income in some places. And the more they upload the more they earn.
  • detecting fake/infected torrents is hard. Sure, you will see some obvious crap sometimes, when the team gets overloaded temporarily, but that's the obvious crap; there is all sorts of other crap that is nowhere near as obvious that you either don't see or don't notice. And the people who do it aren't paid.
So sites employ a variety of defense techniques, some automated, some manual.

But it's like making a burger: there is no "right way" let alone a "best way". You just do your best consistent with your principles.

Some sites choose to make registrations onerous or time consuming, on the assumption that it will put some scammers/spammers off, or make it easier to detect them before they try anything. It works to some degree. But nothing works 100% or all sites would begin doing it; at which point all bad guys would switch to something else. But it inconveniences everyone, malicious or benign.

But just remember: it's someone's idea of how to protect the site/the downloaders. Whether it works or not, or works well or not, or seems to make sense or not, is irrelevant--they have a right to try it and that's why they're trying it.

At TPB, we don't like barriers (we have some, but we only put them up if and when they've proven specifically necessary; which is why things appear haphazard). We believe that most uploaders are legit, and we don't want to hamper people who want to share. And we expect downloaders to shoulder some of the responsibility for their own safety. [No site can ever guarantee 100% safety, so whether they realise it or not all downloaders always bear the ultimate responsibility; we're just more emphatic about it.] So we leave the gate open and deal with fuckers when they actually start fucking around.

We would rather risk having someone upload crap than risk stopping someone uploading gold.

There are plenty of people who say we've got it wrong. That we shouldn't make uploading so easy; and that the lack of hoops here means there is "too much" crap here.

Meh, you can't please all of the people all of the time Cool

Each to their own, I suppose. I just don't know that all those hoops to jump through aren't simply keeping out plenty of good, willing uploaders, even if they keep away a few bad ones. But that's a decision each board needs to make.

Personally I think it is important to encourage downloader responsibility. Which is where uploader branding comes in; if an uploader is known for putting up quality stuff and/or stuff that the downloader in question likes, then the downloader need not worry too much. But every downloader has a responsibility to educate themselves on what constitutes a proper torrent and how to spot a fake. Don't be too desperate that you're gullible.

As for RARBG's methods of managing whom they give membership status to, well I guess their rationale is that if you're not a civilized commenter, you're hardly going to be a civilized uploader. I guess you could take up TKTh3K1ng's offer on getting you hooked up. Wink

With KAT gone, I've recently begun to upload to ExtraTorrent in addition to TPB and so far I've been impressed.  The ET moderators have been very prompt and helpful in response to my queries, and the upload process is very straightforward and problem-free.  Recommended for those of you who may now be looking for a second home.

^^^ Because they know who you are. I'd bet they would even let you index RARs at this stage of your subscription.

Not sure why you say that or what difference it would make even assuming it's true.  What has been your experience with ET?

I dont think it would make any difference even if they knew he was a mod&VIP @ TPB.

Not OP, but let's just say that the rules are a little strict from a n00b's perspective. Other than that, I think the rules are fine. After all, they do have a brand to maintain.

Can anyone recommend any other places to upload torrents to the public? Not private sites. I currently have only 3 places I am a member of that I upload to: l337x, TPB and ET (ExtraTorrent). Since h33t and now KAT has gone down, Ive lost 2 places where the user base was huge and I would like to get my uploads to as many people as possible using the sites with the greatest exposure.
Please be as informative as possible. Thanks for any and all replies that help with this.
