WD just bought out HGST that's all, they probably thought they could expand their company so they bought them also to make themselves bigger.
NAS, media, torrenting.

WD bought Hitachi a while back and started making server quality HDs.
These Hitachis are cheap on ebay. BUT... as server HDs *must* cooled or they'll easily go to 140F. A decent fan will do.

I noticed Hitachi drives, but didn't know about the cooling. Summer will be a problem, leaving my system off during work hours seems to be the only solution, as I can't afford air conditioning 7/24 just to have torrents available non-stop. That or I'll use small refrigerator instead of a PC case for the drives. Used fridges are cheap here.

The bottom line is when it comes to these NAS things, I was talking to somebody a while ago and they had bought one of those Synology things and it was very expensive from what I can gather. Then they had loaded it with all these Seagate Ironwolf drives that cost an absolute fortune. If that's your kind of thing then fair enough but you're gonna really break the bank with that kind of equipment and it's fine until it goes wrong. These Seagates are not very reliable as I've noticed myself that these things indicate bad sector count problems and they happen from new. So investing in some kind of massive NAS system might sound like a good idea but you're forced to purchase these Seagates, they are most likely to go wrong after many many hours of running time just like all Seagate drives do.
The sad thing now Western Digital only seem to go up to about 6TB now which is useless really even though they are a more trusted brand. The truth about having a NAS is that you've still gotta have a backup running in case it goes down suddenly. So again more and more expense for something which you can't rely on. Such a huge amount of money really especially for the Synology. If I had lots of money me personally I would not bother with one of those but that's my choice, some people might. The drives are hugely expensive. Maybe if they had a better brand then I might be interested but sadly these days technology does suffer with lots of problems so you can end up being ripped off and breaking the bank completely.

Hi all
Need recommendations on some hardware. Building a home security system with both analog and digital cameras . Have a really good timelaps video with connections for triggering. But Im looking for a NAS that could handle 4-8 digital camera feeds, and have some form of detector for movement. This NAS is the final hardware in my system. Have built a decentralized IO system with 3 sets raspberry with cameras and IO to PIR sensors and sirens. Sending the info and trigger to another system a combo of an old computer and a commercial home security central. I have dry tested all but the part of a NAS. I probobly have to create a program to sort and log video, sensor, in and out access, failed connections and other. Regards

Motion detection would be a software issue, and presumably done at the Pis.
I am planning a similar type of project, but would use a local web server on an older machine, and probably USB drives on a 4 port hub. I dont know about ACPI type functions on an NAS, but would certainly want the drives to spin down with low levels of activity. Huge drives and high RPM mean *heat*. Consumer drives are not designed for continuous writes. I would have a drive for each Pi, as from my own experience writes from multiple sources at the same time *can* cause problems with USB coontrollers. No clue as to what an NAS would do, or how well their drivers are, but I *believe* many are designed for special types of drives not compatible with SATA. I would certainly be interested in any progress you make on this issue! |
