Mp3gain advice.

Am trying to upload an audiobook.

I noticed the volume was a bit lower than usual and thought I'd use Mp3gain to increase the volume. Then I realized I didn't know if I was doing the right thing, for I did not know the meaning of all the tech terms in the tool. I googled and read that clipping is bad.

Mp3gain tool is new to me and have no working knowledge of audio/audio tools as such.

1) I ran 'Track Analysis' and the output for the first few tracks is as follows.
2) I ran 'Apply Track Gain' available via right menu click on the 5th track and 'Y' appeared under the 3rd column 'clipping'. The audio was louder now though. But did I ruin anything in the process ?



Question is should I upload it as-is (low volume original source) or is there something I can do with mp3gain prior to uploading.

the sound to noise ratio is decreased, means track is loud but noisy

for me, I use an audio editing software like adobe audition before messing with mp3gain,
it will level the volume from sample to sample within a track,
mp3gain only levels the volume from track to track,
so if you wish to increase the volume without clipping you must have to level the volume within the track first,
there's a function in adobe audition called hard limiter, that one i use

i agree with Lebeque, MP3Gain is imho a worthless program..used it once to see if it works..
final verdict? ..No it does not work!

If you are using a high quality encoded track no matter if it is VBR/CBR/ABR ..every single track wich has portions with high pitched notes or sounds pick up jitter and start devorming a bit.

It uses a very basic way of volume leveling that i compare to throwing a blanket over your speaker instead of lowering the volume of the radio...
i think mp3gain is only suitable for people that listen 128kbs mp3 files on a 5 dollar costing chinese made mp3 player

but then again, this is just my opinion, maybe im just very picky
