Migrants using Turkish military's tear gas grenades against Greek border guards

Migrants who are trying to cross into Greece from Turkey are attacking Greek border guards with the type of tear gas grenades that are used by the Turkish military, Greek government Spokesman Stelios Petsas said Wednesday.

Quote:"Migrants who are trying to break into the Greek territory use tear gas, which the Turkish military uses", the spokesman told a press briefing.

Earlier, the Greek authorities published photos of Turkish-made grenades with CS gas that the migrants threw.

According to Petsas, Turkey illegally helps migrants get to the border with Greece in an organised and coordinated operation by the Turkish authorities.

Quote:"Meeting of migrants in the center of Istanbul, in Edirne and other places and free organized transfers to the border, accompanied by the Turkish police, prove this. Migrants say that they receive instructions from the Turkish authorities. Messages that migrants receive on their phones say that the border is open", Petsas said.

The official added that the Turkish side was preparing a fake news campaign with accusations against Greece.

Last Friday, Turkey announced it would not be able to stem the flow of migrants and refugees following the recent increase in tensions in the Syrian province of Idlib, thus opening its border with the European Union to those wishing to cross it. Soon after, thousands of migrants rushed to Turkey's border with Greece and Bulgaria trying to get into Europe.

However, under the 2016 agreement between Turkey and the EU, Ankara promised to restrain the flow of migrants into the bloc, with Brussels pledging to provide funds to help Turkey care for the refugees.

Turkey to deploy special forces to Greek border to prevent Athens pushing migrants back

A migration crisis on the Turkish-Greek border erupted after Ankara announced it would no longer be preventing refugees from going through its territory to Europe in violation of previous agreements with the EU.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu has announced that Ankara will deploy 1,000 special operations police officers at the border with the EU to prevent migrants from coming back. He added that the EU border security agency, Frontex, had pushed around 4,900 migrants back to Turkey.

Quote:"Turkey will deploy 1,000 special operations police officers to prevent migrant pushback at the border”, the minister said as quoted in the newspaper Daily Sabah.

The measure comes as a response to a decision by the EU to push back the new wave of migrants mainly coming from Syria's Idlib Province via Turkey and trying to force their way through the Greek border.

Quote:"The Greek worries are our worries", European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after visiting the border. She added that migrants "have been lured through false promises into this situation."

Since the migrant crisis on the Turkish-Greek border started, Athens has prevented nearly 35,000 migrants from crossing into the country. It also promised to deport the hundreds of those, who made it to the other side, in the near future.

The new wave of migrants started pouring into Turkey after the situation deteriorated in Syria's Idlib Province, which is mostly occupied by militants and terrorists. Turkish forces started a military operation in the province against the Syrian Army further worsening the situation.
