Oh, there's no doubt that Joel will try to milk every last penny he can out of MST3K, the same way Jim Mallon tried to twenty years ago with the webtoons and such. I'm guessing that he'll have touring groups constantly on the go, with different actors in different parts of the country. It won't last. The thing about MST3K wasn't just good riffing, it was the unique set of charismatic comics that came together that made it what it was. Replacing beloved characters with different actors was the first bullet in the MST3K foot. And Joel seems intent to keep shooting (hell, the current tour features no one from the Netflix show).
I'm actually kind of shocked to see so many people here that feel like I do. Let it die. Vive le RiffTrax!

I thought the two new seasons were solid enough, but at the same time I'm not in tears it's not coming back for more.

Another season on Shudder or anywhere would be fine if asshole Joel gave up the reigns and let some talent take over, look how great it worked last time he ran away. In the meantime, Jan 17th in SF:
Join some of riff-history's best and brightest when "MST3K" alum Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl and Jonah Ray completely improvise movie riffs together for the very first time! ($35, All Ages)
Sounds better than a Netflix third season!

I think everyone expected way too much from the new show, that it would tickle all the right nostalgia buttons and be the exact same kind of quirky goodness the original was. Of course it would never reach that level, it didn't come to us as kids/young adults like the first one did.
I had absolutely no problem with the new show, thought it was really good. But I don't go into shit expecting the show makers to cater to my every whim, either, which is what it looks like a lot of people here expected. I am also very confused by all the mentioning of "hollywood influence." I am just plain floored by this ignorance.

I liked the new version. Maybe not as magical as the original but I could see them falling better into a rythm.
But!!! It's not to late to see new MST3K movies. They are on tour currently! I have tickets for both the PDX and Eugene shows coming in January. 2 different movies. This will be the last chance!

I confess, I've yet to see any of the Netflix material (even though I have all of it).
That said: I may be naive, but I was stunned that no one from the old days was included. Especially after Cinematic Titanic being...pretty damn good, usually. And, am I right that Joel wasn't riffing? Just behind the scenes stuff? That seems a let down. He appears a bit jaded to me now, perhaps still sore after leaving over the MST3K movie, & allowing Jim to carry on.

Joel was producing, perhaps writing and overseeing. He portrayed Ardee, one of the low-level Mads responsible for sending them the movie right before the riffing starts. He also played Santa Claus in a host segment for The Christmas That Almost Wasn't. He then returned to riffing for the past four live shows.
Pearl, Bobo, and Observer made three appearances in The Return (Cry Wilderness, Wizards Of The Lost Kingdom 2, and At The Earth's Core). Mary Jo, Kevin and Bill reprised.
And, my personal favorite reprisal, Josh Weinstein came back as Dr. Earhardt for two episodes of The Gauntlet.
