This may be an unpopular opinion, but... if you like the show... support the show and buy the episode?

Personally... I want more MST3k to continue to be made... it seems like the only way that's going to happen is by continuing to support it monetarily. The whole "circulate the tapes" thing was a different time when you couldn't exactly just go out and buy your favorite episodes... it was a time of recording it off of comedy central or whoever happened to have the rights to it at the time on a VHS tape and sharing that tape with a friend. They were already being paid by the network they were on...

There's no need to apologize for a totally reasonable position.
I got a chance to see the first few episodes, I'd like to see the rest, but..I'm good.

6.3 million raised in the kickstarter. cough.
I don't know how this thing is structured, is Joel the owner ceo of mst3k inc?
It sure seems like that money has been wasted. What did people get, access to the first season and paraphernalia/schwag?
How much went into the platform? Why not create something new where one arguably has strengths? Actual new characters or puppets or scenarios or dynamics, something anything.

Is there something I'm fundamentally misunderstanding here? Other than, making a show is expensive, creating an entire streaming platform is expensive?
Who asked for the gizmoplex? There's a forum member, looking at Helles, who puts out funny riffs of 50's movies with no studio. How much does that cost?
I don't hear the anger I'd expect so maybe I'm off.
I get it, I keep coming back for the making fun of bad movies, community, and nostalgia. I wonder if Joel thinks we keep coming back for his creation?
I skip all the host segments, everything but the riffing.
Everything but the riffing (and too often including, looking at the Emily crew in particular), is cringe. I don't blame them, it's someone else's creation. How many years has it been?
Kickstarter, where one can get all the thrills of being an investor without becoming an actual stakeholder.

tldr: I feel like Joel ripped off everyone who donated to the campaign, I'd like to think otherwise.

I pretty much agree.  The Gizmoplex is a needlessly complicated solution to a problem that doesn't exist.  Also, it's only for PC, and I'm guessing most people are streaming to a TV to watch this stuff on devices like Roku or game consoles.

I chipped in a few bucks to support the Kickstarter, but couldn't do the high enough tier to get episodes.  $15 each seems pretty damn high when the entire cost of the production was already paid for by backers.  The subscription tiers are also way too high when compared to price per content on services like Netflix or Disney+.

The annual Rifftrax Live kickstarter kinda rubs me the wrong way for similar reasons, but they almost always make the rewards feel like I'm getting a bargain no matter what tier I pledge at.  So I'm happy to support those.

RiffTrax offers REAL rewards. For a single dollar you can get 10 shorts and often other stuff! They have to make a certain amount before that free shorts reward has been unlocked, but it's always been unlocked. MST3K seem to offer close to regular prices for stuff more often than not. Not much by way of reward unless you spend a lot.

Well, it certainly has the merit of being an interesting and presumptuous opinion given that this is a forum on a Pirate Bay-related site.  Kinda like walking into a biker bar and suggesting that they all get rid of their noisy hogs, leather jackets, and outsider attitudes and instead get mini vans, wear khakis, and get a mortgage.  But, you do you, kid.

Anyway, does some kind soul got a link?

I would not go quite that far. I'd say the whole "rebirth" of MST3K has been ... mis-guided, in the sense of what they imagined a "new" MST3K would look like. Because, and I might be the only one, I wasn't crazy about it. They kept what didn't need to be kept, and changed what didn't need to be changed. And the production values have just fallen through the floor, I am certain because so much money have been funneled to ... I want to call it "frippery", but it was plainly someone's vision. Gizmoplex is just the most recent example.

But, you know, if I had the money, I would follow my vision. And maybe I would have made a worse mess of it. Who knows.

Best response.

I'm pretty sure Joel and the group are doing JUUUUST fine. If I wasn't getting them here it's not something I would be purchasing anyway because it's way too expensive, so.... <shrugs>

Oh, and Rifftrax > new MST3K... Wink

Thanks ocag!
