MAC DVD firmware circumvention?
#11
Actually, my drives are RPC-2 drives, and when I used VLC, it does override the region. I set mines to a foreign region (like 3, the DVDs I bought were 1)to be sure, and when using VLC in GNU/Linux, it'll play any DVD regardless of any region. It uses a library called "libdvdcss" to override the region settings. That's why I recommended it earlier in the thread.

Don't just consider our views, land_stander, just try it. Don't be afraid to brick the drive, like what Nike says, "just do it!" Smile

Correct.

And someone (you, or the Head of your companies IT department if you're using company equipment) has decided to pay them for doing it.

It's the kind of thing which makes the technically literate avoid Apple products like the plague. They're designed for "consumers" for "the rest of us" as they famously put it ie. for people who don't know what they're doing, don't want to know what they're doing, and who are happy to have someone else decide everything for them and present it in a shiny locked box that they can't fuck up by trying anything new or different.

[That sounds cynical but it isn't. It is a perfectly legitimate thing for Apple, and the non IT literate, to do. Your problem is that you bought a pair of Gucci loafers but now you want to go hiking.]

Of course he should try it, but not all RPC2 drives allow raw access, in which case it doesn't matter what OS or app you are using - it just won't work.

I don't have first hand experience with the drives in modern MacBooks. To the best of my knowledge, Apple still uses DVD-R drives by Matshita. The exact model can be found using the System Information app.

Chances are pretty good there is a way to flash it and end the MAFIAA imposed madness.

This NIK guy, I like him! Smile

From what I've tested, I'm speaking from experience and from all three drives scattered into all three computers. All work.
