RX has a good point. Don't pay for GPL licensed software. For the support, perhaps, but any linux distro has plenty available *free* support from IRC channels to forums. For a newb to linux it's probably a good idea to start with an ubuntu based distro. Both mint and zorin are ubuntu based, but there are plenty others. You can test drive most distros by creating a live usb with a couple of gigs persistance (pendrivelinux.com) and boot it without running the installer. What you really should consider is what kind of desktop environment you want. Im quite comfy with lubuntu's lxde, but if you want bells and whistles there are a shitload of different DEs. Zorin might be a good choice if you want to be able to set up your DE to feel like what you are used to. As far as old PC's go, I'll still advice anyone to use lubuntu.

I ran Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 - Betsy - on an ancient Athlon (2004?) with 1.5G memory, and ran pretty well, especially with LXDE / XFCE .
Would still be using it, except the hard drive died.
