Lightning fast downloading, now!
#1
I have gone from a few kbs/sec to continual 3.5mbs/sec! The little that I know has been self-taught through trial-and-mostly-error, but I am so STOKED that I just have to share this.
I began with Torch client. Torrents would run like a snail for a while, then shift into "pause" mode, so I could not just let the torrents run unattended.
I moved to UTorrent client, and the pausing happened no more. I discovered I could go into preferences and run a test to see if my down- and up-loading were set up properly. The results were that I couldn't upload at all because my port was closed or using wrong one or something. But my speeds were rated a max of 1.5 mbs/sec.
Then I began using BitTorrent client and didn't see much difference from UTorrent.
I always experiment with any and everything, so I routinely need to format my harddrive; with my HP500z desktop, it is called "system recovery" and it sends you back to "factory condition" with a fresh OS and nothing else. The last time I did it, I bought a NetGear network adaptor, and to get it working, I ended up going into my router's settings (on mine, I accessed it by typing "10.0.0.1" into the address bar of windows explorer). I went to "Advanced" tab, and, lo and behold, a subtab named "Port Forwarding" showed me it was DISABLED! I enabled it. Then I downloaded a fresh BitTorrent client, went to the test in preferences, and IT WAS THEN ABLE TO ENABLE CORRECT SETTINGS, and, the results were WAY HIGHER!
Sure enough, my actual results at speed, I could swear, are even higher. It is taking me NO TIME AT ALL to download 3gb and 6gb files. Smile

That's good to hear.

Just don't get the ISP's attention with those new speeds; they'll limit it even if you're just downloading GNU/Linux torrents.

Appreciate the tip, @RobertX. I guess if that happens I will probably have to finally delve into new territory, VPNs, and start paying for it. I CAN'T quit now, I am having far too much fun!
