Because they'd have to have audio separations between the movie audio and the riffing and audience audio (so as not to release copyrighted audio they don't have the rights for), with a minimal amount of bleed between those channels getting picked up from recording in a big room with speakers amplifying both the movie and riff audio. Which would also be hell to sync up with the movie at home.
You can pretty much assume that if the movie is under the ownership of a major studio, unless it's some small potatoes B-grade horror or fantasy movie from decades ago, it's not going to be released as a VOD. The amount of money it would take for them to get the rights for a DRM-free downloadable release would be completely prohibitive. Really, the best solution is their studio recordings from the live script. It's clean, listenable, and easily synced at home.
Speaking of Krull, if anyone needs anything this weekend, you can stack the sale code LEARN with the Krull codes GLAIVE and COLWYN for 30% off on the site.

One reason, albeit minor, is sometimes the visual element is important. Case in point: Space Mutiny. Kevin's tutu and the nudity-blocking gorilla. Minor, to be sure, but something. (I missed KRULL due to work, so it may not be even a little relevant for that one.)

There were no visual elements to Krull to speak of. It was a pretty straightforward riff.

Quote:Well, when I said that before, I mean someone somehow was able to record the whole show and synced it with the movie, just like before.
Except that one of those people gave up on going to these live shows because they were tired of the bullshit....
But there was someone else. Maybe they went?

Yeah, they laid it out when having issues with obtaining the rights to Twilight and eventually, Starship Troopers. The reason they've been able to riff so many Sony/Columbia titles as live shows is because someone in Sony's theatrical screenings department is a fan, and to get the rights to sell the show as a VOD, they'd need to clear it with their home media department, which is allegedly a hassle (and as noted, prohibitively expensive).
At least there are video masters of the live riff sitting in a vault, just in case someone changes their mind.

There was once a recording of Anaconda (IIRC) taken straight off the feed or downloaded from a theater's DVR recording for the encore that was available online.
My guess is that there was so much blow back from that that it never really stopped but it isn't public anymore. These things could show up somewhere down the line like that audio of Cinematic Titanic doing The Astral Factor....just as there's probably recordings of The Doll Squad and other stuff they did in someone's collection.

Can I request while they're at it can they grab the National Theater production of "Frankenstein" and post it, too? Getting sick of being asked to spend $16 x2 to see it when they feel like releasing it again.

(Aug 25, 2018, 12:23 pm)mandrock Wrote: Just got this email from RiffTrax, promoting this Saturday Matinee re-broadcast of their Rifftrax: Live Krull!
"We won't be able to sell this live show later on RiffTrax.com — so while the story of Krull is timeless, our latest hilarious live show's availability isn't! So if you want to enjoy this show, today's your absolute last chance. "
Does this mean they won't be offering it at all, or will simply be offering an audio only version (because they can't offer the movie itself)?
Following an aborted showing of the live riff at an AMC theater in Colorado (they completely screwed the whole thing up and we wound up seeing a grand total of 7 minutes of the middle of the show) I wrote to RiffTrax to ask if this would be available to purchase in the future. Here's (the pertinent part of) their response:
"The answer to your question is yes, we absolutely are going to be producing an audio-only riff of Krull based on the script from last week's live show.
"It's not on the production calendar just yet so I don't know precisely what the release date will be, but it's a Kickstarter reward at certain levels, and we really like to deliver all the rewards before the year is over."
So while it looks like we won't be getting a release of the full-on live show, we will at least be getting an audio-only version using the same script. Hope this helps!
