There's lots of educated people who are low in intelligence. There's lots of intelligent people with no formal education. Employers used to rely heavily on educated people with all the right paperwork/qualifications.
That's changed thank ... Some of my friends have no formal education beyond the age of 15 and are at the top of their chosen field of expertise. Obviously careers like Medicine, Law etc needs formal training. But for me, education is just another tool to add to your tool box in life. It's handy to have it, but you've got other tools that can do the job just as good and sometimes better.

I agree 100% . It's not what you got, it's how you use it. People with high IQ's can be some of the most uneducated people out there, people with lower IQ's can be CEO's of companies.  IQ is the ability to learn, not a measure of how intelligent you are (like you said, just one of many tools). An ignorant person with a high IQ I equate to a 30 gallon tank that's empty, and others only have a 15 gallon tank that's full so they are living to their potential more.

So if you didn't do well in school, or don't score high on IQ or other tests, don't worry.  For the most part, intelligence is dynamic and people aren't generally Intelligent or stupid, but they have strengths and weaknesses. Just because you know something I don't doesn't make me stupid and you smart (or vice versa).

Intelligence and Stupidity (to me) can be used more as verbs than nouns... If you know you don't know something, and would like to learn it, but don't do anything TO learn it, you are exhibiting stupidity traits. On the other hand, training your brain to do something you previously didn't know is the act of intelligence... And if you fail in the attempt of gaining intelligence, that's not really failing as long as you gave it a true effort.

good discussion...

Good answers from LZA and lidlnelly.

I hear teachers telling us that most university grads drive taxis for a living.

MOre often than not, people are working outside of the degree/training they went to school for. Either by availability (can't find work), or they find out what they went to school for they don't really care to do.

But to answer the question again: They can never take education away from you... It's never a waste.

A healthy skepticism, an openness to new ideas, and a willingness to seek these ideas out--that's a formal education, right there. One which should be continued throughout life.
