Also, 50-60 hour work weeks are a fairly common thing for me, so beyond family, friends and other hobbies, my time is pretty limited.

That being said Anarchemist, your comment spurred me on and I started looking into an alternative so we'll see if that goes anywhere. I'd really like to improve on the method before doing any more and then my plan is to provide the scripts and details on how anyone can do it, as otherwise it will take forever for me to do them on my own.

Not much to say except THANK YOU.  I simply do not have a computer capable of handling video editing. I got very into Fanedits a while back and really wanted to do something with Indy and Temple of Doom.  I didn't get far because a)I lacked the skills and b)my crappy computer wouldn't let me learn very much, so I am truly a leach here.
But I LOVED Zombie Nightmare---I didn't used to, I never rewatched the episode because of the crappy picture--but your version was fantastic. Anyway, thanks again and glad you are still looking at this project! It was honestly my favorite thing to happen since Season 11!

@Riffling, that sounds awesome, geting a "script"/details on how to do this. If it's possible I'd love to contribute to this cause in my limited free time as well.

Maybe we could set up a cloud drive where we can all work on the same episode together. Idk, just trying to think how we could do this efficiently. I've got a bit of experience at least, and will help where I can!

So after another couple hundred hours of work I'm putting this project on hold on my end as I wait for technology to improve and become more accessible. I've learned a lot though that I want to share with the community so if anyone else has ideas, I'm willing to listen. The first episode I released was using only Adobe Premiere. I've continued playing around with Adobe Premiere and After Effects using AE's many masking functions but they don't work well for this purpose at scale (90 minutes of material). OpenCV which is a python image-processing library was an alternative which I still think has promise but I've implemented all of the ideas I've had and none of them have lead to what I'd consider an acceptable solution.

What I have learned, some of which I mentioned prior:
-The MST3K DVD encodes can be substantively improved using the QTGMC deinterlacing filter. It's by-far ahead of other filters and is an important first step in getting the best shadowrama as well. Here is a zip file with everything someone would need in order to set up the process and begin encoding (there are a bunch of .dll's for AVIsynth plugins so it might be flagged when you download it): https://mega.nz/file/c6wgEYzT#Xj73BQx7in...S0dwVgvYUs

-The next step prior to isolation is up-scaling the shadowrama, I ran a lot of tests trying things in a different order. Originally I had used the xBR algorithm which had proven better than several others. This time I tested 6 different DNN AI-upscaling algorithms as well. FSRCNN was much better than the xBR but the proprietary software Topaz Labs Video Enchance AI actually performed far and away the best. Note: this is the best for the shadowrama itself, it really messes up human skin and eyes, giving it a weird effect. So I was planning on using FSRCNN for the host segments and Topaz Video to upscale the shadowrama. This is actually a huge improvement over xBR and it really looks like the shadowrama was filmed in 4k/HD, it's incredible.

-The real problem is with isolating the shadowrama. Thresholding alone isn't enough because of the surrounding scenery and inconsistency, I tried adaptive thresholding including creating my own version of the Otsu method (I read a dozen or so academic papers on computer vision processing throughout this whole thing and luckily I have mathematics background to make sense of some of it). I also got a hold of Silhouette 2020 which is an "oscar-winning" tool used by big-budget Hollywood studios for this sort of thing but that's not something a hobbyist like myself could really learn in a reasonable time (especially as they also make money by selling you training courses and I couldn't find those).

Some hope though: I actually think that Mask R-CNN which is a Deep Learning Neural Network approach to semantic segmentation of objects would work but it would require training a specific model for this task which requires annotating images which is an incredibly manual and time-consuming process. I trained a model based off of 3 images I annotated but it's obviously not enough, and I didn't want to spend 200+ incredibly tedious hours annotating a thousand images for my machine learning model and find out that it still wouldn't work as well as I want.  Topaz Labs also has a "Mask AI" program that does what we want, but only for photos, not videos and there's no batch processing/it has some upfront manual effort. If they made a version of it for videos (and it's only a matter of time they or someone else does), then that's going to be the best solution. So right now, I think I'm going to play the waiting game for technology to come to improve as well as for it to become more accessible. The fun part of this whole project for me was the learning aspect and challenge and I don't want to spend a lot of time creating new episodes based on an approach which produces something I deem to be sub-standard.

If anyone wants to play around with some of my OpenCV code with a test clip to see it in action, you can download it here: https://mega.nz/file/pqo0WYoS#2ESZkdUHbl...3tAoBP3Wps
I'd like to share the Adobe Premiere project, but I'm not sure the best way to do that as all of the working files add up to 24GB, but here are all the project files beyond the videos which should give an idea of the effects and methods from my first attempt, also if you think you've got skills, PM me and we'll figure out how to get you the complete project file: https://mega.nz/file/Qig2BILS#NqLvUbyDPQ...cFA9fb5Se4

One funny note about this whole project: the holes in Crow's head make this whole damn thing 100x harder. Smile

Thanks Riffling for your huge investment of time in this project and for this excellent technical summary.

I'm particularly interested in your QTGMC deinterlacing zip since Handbrake 1.x+ only does Yadif with no options unlike the old days with Handbrake 0.10.x.

The older HB versions have fast/slow/slower deint options with the slower being:
"Yadif, a spatially (within one frame) and temporally (between several frames) aware deinterlacer"

For the life of me, I have not been able to add cli parameters to the Advanced Options in HB 1.x+ to replicate the excellent deint=slower performance in HB 0.10.x.

So, for anything that required deint, I've been stuck at 0.10.5 since the deint is so much better.

I'm hopeful that QTGMC could work well for me since deint is so important for older, 480i DVD sources and HB 1.x+ is sub-par.

Thanks!

lol and I have trouble syncing iriffs to media files (getting better but ducking seems to be the big problem for me) ... this project would probably make my head explode (scanners style) Big Grin

You're awesome, Riffling, thanks for spending so much time trying to make it work. It's an accomplishment just that you explored so much and found the limits of current technology. Thanks for documenting and sharing here.

This version of Zombie Nightmare was one of my fav things to happen in MSTland in a long while. Has anyone done any other similar upgrades recently? The host segments and shadowrama still present, but new bluray or HD version of the movies??
Just wondering! And hoping!

I'm only now seeing this particular post for the first time. Can somebody provide a working link for the Zombie Nightmare Remaster?

I'm dying to see this work!

Seconded. I am particularly excited by the prospect of seeing ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE upgraded because I happen to have grown up just a couple of streets over from the convenience store that Tony chases the bandits out of just before he gets run down in the street, and while I have been able to identify quite a few of the filming locations in the general area, the fact that Zombie Nightmare was so freaking dark made this an impossibility for many scenes.

What MST3K referred to as Hank Peter's Italian Grocery is actually "LAVIOLETTE'S" in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The strip looks pretty much the same today. It's Laviolette's, the car garage, and Mayfair Tavern.

Much to my frustration, mere WEEKS after I originally discovered that a MST3K episode film was filmed in my neighbourhood, the garage changed its sign, which had been there since I was a kid. You can still see the original if you click back to the GoogleStreetView for 2007.

Anyway, it's still pretty wild to me that when I was asleep in my bed when I was seven or eight years old, Tia Carrere was filming some of her first scenes only 600 meters away. Laviolette's was where we went for junk food and Popsicles after soccer games in the park behind. Beer when I was older. Still go by there from time to time. I will be passing by tomorrow.

I take 0 credit for this, and don't let the opening and host segments fool you---the movie, which starts off dark, looks fantastic and sharp and clear. Super impressive work on this!
