Decca Wiener Philharmoniker - The Orchestral Edition (LP Box Set)









The Orchestral Edition is an authoritative 6LP orchestral and concerto set, celebrating the 64-year relationship of the Vienna Philharmonic with Decca Classics.

This partnership was the catalyst for standard-setting pioneer work in the field of recording techniques on the part of DECCA and provides an artistic documentation of numerous recording firsts and musical milestones and rarities. A document of a label-orchestra relationship, of famous venues and of the art of classical recording. Few labels can claim to be so associated with a city as inextricably as Decca is with Vienna. No history of classical recordings would be complete without a chapter documenting how both Decca and the WP worked to perfect the art of recording in the city’s great concert halls, most notably in the famous Sofiensaal.

This unique 180 gram LP pressings set was only limited to 2000 numbered copies.

Animation breathes new life into the Second Doctor story The Power of the Daleks (Season 4, Story 30). No complete film recordings of The Power of the Daleks are known to have survived the purge of the BBC’s archive in 1975.


The unfinished and unbroadcast Fourth Doctor story Shada (located in the Specials folder) was completed combining original live-action footage with hand-drawn animation.

Penned by legendary Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy author and Doctor Who writer Douglas Adams, the story was set to be the Season Seventeen finale but strike action at the BBC in November 1979 meant the studio scenes were never completed and the adventure was abandoned.

Wagner's opera in 3 acts is set in legendary Brittany and Cornwall, with a tragic love story that revolves around the themes of love, night, and death.

Isolde is being brought from Ireland to Cornwall by Tristan to be the bride of his uncle, King Mark. Isolde is angry at Tristan because he slew Morold, Isolde's betrothed, who came from Ireland to exact tribute from Cornwall. However, when she sees Tristan, her feelings begin to change. She plans to poison him, but when she and Tristan drink from the same cup, it turns out that Brangäne, her maid and confidante, has filled it with a love potion.



Few operas have had such a profound and lasting impact on Western music as Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. A work of overwhelming emotional intensity, it embodies the extremes of passionate love, existential longing, and the inevitability of death, all set against the backdrop of a musical revolution that would forever change the course of harmony and orchestration. From its daring harmonic language to its philosophical depth, Tristan und Isolde remains one of the most captivating and enigmatic works in the operatic canon.

Wagner found inspiration for Tristan und Isolde in the medieval Tristan and Iseult legend, a tale of forbidden love, betrayal, and tragic destiny. However, he did not simply adapt the story; he transformed it into an intimate, psychological drama driven by his own philosophical and emotional concerns.

At the time of its conception in the 1850s, Wagner was deeply influenced by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, whose ideas on will, suffering, and the desire for oblivion resonated deeply with him. Schopenhauer’s assertion that love is merely an unfulfilled longing that can never be satisfied found its perfect artistic expression in Tristan und Isolde. Wagner himself wrote that he was “never happier” than when composing the work — despite the fact that he was embroiled in financial troubles, personal scandals, and an ill-fated love affair.

This combination of personal passion, intellectual depth, and musical daring gave birth to an opera that was unlike anything the world had seen before.

At its heart, Tristan und Isolde is a meditation on the intersection of love and death, or more precisely, the idea that true love can only be consummated in death. The two lovers are bound not by earthly passion but by an almost metaphysical connection that transcends reality. Their love is both ecstatic and annihilating, driving them toward an inevitable demise.

The opera’s themes also reflect Wagner’s own view that art, like love, must aspire to something beyond the physical world.
