I was shadowbanned on reddit at least a month ago. I've spent four weeks trying to contact a human being about it. "No reply at all", as the song says.

As an experiment, I created a few test accounts. Some with a vpn, some with an anonymous email, some with both.

vpn OR anonymized email = immediate "shadow ban"

Fuck reddit: I have deleted my accounts (public and private).

That sucks. I just got finished reading about shadowbans and possible ways around them. But it's all stuff you probably already read and tried.  I've no allegiance to reddit either, other than a deep loathing of Discord.  I pasted some info that probably won't help you, but might be of use to someone else.

Reddit uses your IP address and your browser cookies among other things to create a “fingerprint,” which is how they recognize you’re the same person. If you were to change your IP with a VPN, you’d likely be connecting to an IP that has been cycled around and abused by others before. Reddit, among other companies, flags these IPs so if you use them, Reddit knows you’re using a VPN. Even if your IP is different now, if you ever used the same IP for both accounts even once, then Reddit logged it and now knows it’s your. If that never happened and you kept the IPs separate at all time but forgot to clear your browser cookies, then Reddit will still log that it was you since your PC has files and connections on it constantly that help sites like Reddit identify you. If you wanted to prevent this in the future, you’d have to install an ad/tracking blocker, change IPs constantly with a VPN, and ensure that your identify wasn’t somehow being leaked in another way from your computer. See here: PrivacyTools - Encryption Against Global Mass Surveillance. Note this is only for future preventative measures and likely cannot do you much good for your previous account since it’s already logged.

Reddit doesn’t care at all if you have multiple accounts, but if you offend on one then don’t expect them to not ban your other accounts too. Reddit is usually very solid with bans and appeals don’t do much good. You can try submitting a request here Submit a request to appeal your ban, but know that it’s a long shot. You’d likely have to be completely honest/apologetic and provide solid proof that it was unfair if you wanted them to comply since they have absolutely zero obligation to do so.

That said, you can always continue browsing anonymously or by making a new account. If your IP is blacklisted, then you’ll have to appeal your IP to be unbanned or use a VPN/different IP at all times. You can browse anonymously using a VPN like Mullvad (which can block all internet when off of it so your real IP never leaks) or ProtonVPN. Another option is to use a browser with a build-in network or VPN like Tor (which creates a new IP every time you open it) or Opera. Alternatively, you could use an extension in your browser of choice like Chrome or Firefox with the proper tweaks from PrivacyTools to ensure you don’t get tracked/associated with your default IP again.

Lastly, as a nuclear option, you could contact your ISP and ask them for a new IP address. Often if you completely disable your internet by unplugging the router/modem and leave it off for a few days you’ll be assigned a new IP. Worst comes to worst, get a new modem from Amazon or your ISP (if you call them and say yours is broken then they often replace it for free or for a small fee).

As an aside, snew is a Reddit client that uses Reddit’s API to serve you uncensored content by allowing deleted messages to still be seen as well as login and post from there. Note that you’ll likely need a new account if your old ones are banned, as it’s still Reddit, just a different way to access it.

Yeah but who could have imagined that automated shadow bans without leaving a trace would cause problems for admins? /s

Before I understood what Shadow Banning was I was Shadow Banned from Demonoid immediately after I tried to organize encoders (2007) because Demonoid was removing releases at the behest of RiffTrax. Reddit is monetizing *hard* at the moment, they could in the future just flat out delete our subreddit. TPB, and these related forums were the most reliable as far as admins and resilience. So is there a third option for us, just in case? I don't believe Reddit can be trusted, but hope it will be there for our use when we need it. Still, maybe throwing out more options isn't a bad idea? (Though I fully realize we only have it set up as a backchannel in the case of emergencies)

Here is info on reddit Shadowbans for anyone wanting more info about the reality of how and why: https://www.reddit.com/r/kpophelp/commen...d_to_know/
